Well folks, I went to Green Landings Flight Center last week to get some transition training (more on this later) and fly my Jet home to Sebastian. I am currently in Danville, VA waiting for weather to clear. I flew out of Green Landings on Tuesday morning just after the fog lifted and headed South to Low Country Regional (RBW). I have XM weather on a Garmin 510 and the weather in South Carolina did not look like it was clearing as forecast. So, I landed in Danville to take a potty break, get fuel and check the weather in more detail. The fog never lifted in South Carolina and did not look like it was going to lift before the rain came in from the West. I know the folks in Danville fairly well and was able to get my plane in a hangar. I am not sure I would have been able to do that if I had flown on to somewhere in North Carolina. So, I got a rental car and a hotel room right next to the airport.

The weather is clearing today, but the forecast winds along my route are 10 - 15kts gusting 25 to 30kts. Winds aloft are pretty high, too. I think I'll stay here until they get better. Probably Saturday since there is another front coming through tomorrow. Attached are a couple of pictures, one is on the way, somewhere near Lynchburg, VA and the other is on the ground in Danville.

Now for the transition training plan. My wife, Donna is a CFII and teaches at Florida Tech in the College of Aeronautics. She developed a transition training plan for me to get comfortable with the plane and be able to fly it safely. As we know, the Lightning does not fly like a Cessna or Piper and takes a little bit to get used to the pitch control. The transition plan provided for a lot of climbs, decents, cruise at different power settings, practice patterns at altitude, slow flight, stalls, etc. before you do the landings. You also need to get one nights sleep before you finish the landing portion. This is actually very helpful because your brain processes things while you sleep.  Anyway, it worked for me and the plan took 4 flights to complete. You may be able to do it in 3 flights, but because of the timing, mine took 4.

Have a wonderful day,

Dennis

Hi guys, I’m usually not to chatty I think this is the second time I have ever said anything here but I think this is worth mentioning. I have term life insurance that locks the price for ten years. Well mine came up for renewal and during the previous ten years I built and have been flying my Lightning. My renewal premium went ballistic to the point I was thinking about selling the Lightning and just flying the Maule. But I found this guy Alan S. Daniel. His premium was half of any of the insurance company’s I looked at. If anyone is interested he e-mail is alan(at)danielagency.com (alan(at)danielagency.com)
It is finally snowing here in Wisconsin, I’m putting skis and going ski flying.

Excellent photo over the wing Dennis! Great motivation to get my kit (#65) up in the sky in Perth Australia.
Thanks for posting it.

Hi Wayne, glad to hear your Lightning is going good. Be carefull that your wife dont take it over when she finds out how nice it is. How about posting that training plan on the newsletter as we are always learning new things even with lots of hours under our belt. Old dogs CAN learn new tricks.

Thanks all for your best wishes. I finally got home this afternoon after spending a few days in Danville. The plane flew great and I had a good time, although it was pretty cold this morning. It's time for an oil change and torquing the head bolts. I now have a little over 50 hours on the plane. Hopefully I'll see some of you at Sebring next Saturday. I know I have some questions for the Dynon folks.
