Hi All,
A while ago one of our leading flying magazines ran quite a large article entitled Small airplanes in Big Places. This was about several CT`s (a rather upmarket and expensive plastic plane if you are not familiar) which is available is Light Plane or Microlight specification. Mainly a matter of weight. This group had flown across some rough country, Grand Canyon, Bryce, Monument Valley etc.and much was made of their flight.
I wrote to the Editor and pointed out that their exploits should be measured against the Kolb Monument Valley Fly In. My letter is reproduced below.
I had forgotten all about it, even the name of the mag. but today received a post from the Editor asking if I had any pics. and details
I have replied telling him that there are good pics and blogs around and asking for an address to send them to. If he goes for that I will post the address etc.
This is just a heads up to give you a chance to get together something if he decides to go for it. I certainly don`t feel qualified after only one visit, and that by car.
This is a good chance to put Kolbs on the map, particularly here in the UK where there are very few.
It is a top class magazine with very good pictures and would give any of your pics a first class showing.

regarding your article about the CT on long flights. I thought you might be interested in a group of Kolb microlight pilots who fly from various points in the US to Monument Valley each year to the Unorganised Kolb Annual Fly in. One or two trail their planes in but the majority fly very long.
distances. They camp at Gouldings and fly the surrounding spectacular John Wayne countryside early morning and evening and hangar fly during the heat of the day. There is usually a BBQ get together each night. I managed to make it to Monument Valley for the Fly In while touring by car a few years ago. A great occasion..
Perhaps the doyen is John Hauck who flies from his base in Alabama. He is no stranger to long distance flights in his Kolb Mark 3 as seventeen years ago he flew his first trip from his base to Alaska. Flying 17400 miles in 41 days with 232 hours flight time. His engine is a Rotax 912 of 80 horse power and during the flight he used two sets of plugs with two oil changes. He has done this trip several times since up to Barrow Point and diverts widely to visit friends en route.
He carried full camping equipment and landed on logging roads to refuel at roadside garages. He carries a rifle and a handgun among his stores. Not he says for protection from bears but from the loggers.
