I had asked John Coze to let me see his aft-mounted battery tray in his 6 cylinder Cheetah/Tiger. I pushed on the side to see how rigid the installation was a was surprised to see it move around a lot. I guess cutting off the end so a larger (longer) battery can be installed is not a great idea.
John chose to have me install my new battery tray.
What I found was quite interesting. Of the 4 screws/bolts holding the tray in place, no two were alike. Well, they each had the same lock nuts. Two crews on the outboard side were next to impossible to remove. Note to self: install nut plates. Each of those screws were different as were the washers used. Both screws were WAAAAY too long. One a half inch longer than the other. Makes removing a lock nut a pain-in-the-ass. Neither of the two bolts on the inboard side were the same. One was just barely long enough to install a lock nut, sans washer.
I installed the new tray with new hardware: 2 AN3-11A bolts on top (the cross brace adds thickness) and 2 AN3-7A bolts on the bottom. All bolts got AN970-3 on the back (against the honeycomb) and on the battery tray side. Turns out there is enough room to use them there also. I used MS21042-L3 nuts on all bolts.
Unfortunately, the aluminum 'bobbin' spacers were never used and the honeycomb is crushed a little. Can't get in there to open up the honeycomb to install them either.

My aft battery tray is the stock AG5B that came from the factory. It has the long side mounted to the attachment wall. That is it is transverse rather than longitudinally mounted. This puts less stress on the honeycomb thru bolts since the moment is shorter. I used the bigger AN970 washers and the spools to keep from crushing the honeycomb. FAA accepted the data from Maynard Crosby's 2 place STC and from the SaberToothed Tiger.
It only took about 25 pages or so of paperwork and about 6 weeks of review and rewrites and one on site inspection to get the field approval..
I think moving the battery back there combined with some other tweaks was one of the better speed mods I've done. And now the Short Stack Powerflow doesn't cook my battery anymore.!

One note I forgot to include. His battery showed signs of being overheated. Not sure if eliminating the metal container would have helped, but it wouldn't hurt.

NO, my tray is for the G-35. Maynard just cut off the end and let the battery hang over. Beautiful workmanship, let's of attention to detail.

No field approval necessary. The battery was part of the STC. The tray is owner produced.

Maynard used a Piper box on the original Sabertooth Tiger. Seems Coze had told me that he did ALL the work on his Sabertooth STC...
Not sure where you came up with Maynard cutting off a box??

the tray that holds the box is the production AA5A tray with the end cut off. The box is a Piper box.
There is a distinction between the tray and the box.
Don't feel bad. There are a lot of folks that don't understand the words I write.
