Does anyone use the AnywhereMap software with a PDA while flying. If so
please provide a pirep. I'm trying to decide to between the AnywhereMap
with the Dell PDA or the Lorance 600c GPS.

Thanks,
Danny

I used anywhere map with an Ipaq untill about 18 months ago. When my 701 is finished I'll put a dedicated unit in it. Probably a Garmin 296. The AW map on my Ipaq worked just fine. I liked it a lot. It does all they claimed. Refresh was a litttle slow but the Ipaq was a 2002 model. What turned me off was that it was installed in volatile memory and if I let it sit for a month the batterry would die and lose the AW map. Soooo I had to keep reinstalling it. You can move it to a non volatile area of memory but the installation has to be just right. I personally think it was too much trouble. I have an older black and white unit that I havn't used for years and I know that I can turn it on tomorrow and it will pick up 3 satellites and give my location within 2 minutes. Maybe the pocket PC's they make today are better in this respect, probably. Cut a long story short. The software is great.......Geoff

I have used the Anywhere Map for several years and have found ways to =
work around the couple of things that give me problems.
Their customer support is VERY good. At Oshkosh and Sun Fun they update =
any Controlvision unit for free.
The display and its operation keep me using it.
The thing that gave me trouble at first was the fact that I'm not =
computer literate and downloading updates always hit a snag. Solved it =
by having the program loaded to a flash card and keeping it with the =
unit.
If the battery on the pda runs down it dumps the program and must be =
reloaded, big problem for me if doing it on the computer ,no problem if =
using the flash card. Takes about 5 min.
For a nominal charge I got Control Vision to burn a card for my wife's =
PDA as well so I can carry a backup for less than $50.
I use an Ipac PDA, a larger screen on a tablet computer would be worth =
the money. John

I think the features are great, and with a new PDA the speed and
brightness are good. The stylus can be tricky in turbulence but has
been manageable.

I may be selling mine to consolidate the panel into one bigger piece of
glass. I just bought a new iPaq (2950?) and new s/w update that is
still good for a while. I have the StreetMap database too with cables
setup for easy removal in car/plane.

I just installed one in my 701. The wireless GPS with bluetooth Dell Ax=
im PDA are great. There are no more concerns with dead batteries and hav=
ing to reinstall the software with any Windows Mobile 5 PDA. The wirele=
ss operation is great, you can pull the unit out of the mount and hand i=
t to your copilot/passenger and they can check gas prices ahead. All so=
rts of convenience features in that software now, and as the software im=
proves, you upgrade for free as part of your annual subscription. Then t=
he PDAs improve every year or two, and then you upgrade, for a few hundr=
ed dollars, if you have to have the best. Harder to do that with a Garmi=
n. =20

There is (was) only one AnywhereMap here in our Club (about 4 years ago).

He liked it very much, the only concern was to see the map with the sun ( I dont know what PDA model or brand he used). He uses now a Garmin instead.

Probably newer PDA's have solved this problem. I used to have a Palm. and only could see the programs inside a room. even tree shades were not enough.

Saludos
Gary Gower.
