Hi, I'm thinking about drilling the Spar web under the co-pilots seat so that I can mount my Safety Trim control box. Has anyone done similar or
have any thoughts on it?

cheers

Since most people have the control stick cable going to behind the panel to
connect the other stick switches, this tends to be a better place to mount
the Safety Trim box. Mine is mounted on the next forward bulkhead, top left
corner.

I wouldn't drill it. But, that plastic high-strength velcro 2" wide
would work perfectly.

Dual Lock is great stuff. I put in in some products I manufacture. It comes in a couple of different interlocking head density as well as in Black or Clear. It can be purchased in any HD / LOWES aviation department or on eBay

That's the stuff...it's darn tough. My safety trim is held on by
that stuff, stuck upside down to the bottom of my radio stack.

Thank you Patrick for the photos. That's is precisely the sort of thing I was thinking about doing. I asked Vans about drilling the Web and they seemed to think it would be ok as long as the holes were small and not great in number. I think 4 x #19 holes would qualify in that respect.

As for the 3M Velcro I think that Idea has merit as well. I have actually got some here that I had used to mount a Remote Control Head for a Ham radio in my SUV. It worked well for about 8 months and then the Sun eventually melted the glue and it fell off. (it gets hot in Aussie) I still can't get the glue off the Dashboard Smile

thank you all

Instead of drilling new holes, i first try using any existing holes. Thus, I used the existing spar attach bolts to attach a small shelf for holding all my control stick wiring and connections, which worked out well.

Unfortunately, i can't find photos of my install. FWIW.

Hey John,

While I suggested the velcro, and think it could be perfect
for the use, I have one more thing for a thinking point.
If you do use velcro, pay close attention to the overall
installation. Remember that your controls are under the seat
as well. So ANYTHING you put under the seat, be wary that
it's secured in such a way that if it breaks free it can't
jam the controls. I'd be fine using velcro, but, you
probably should put a cable clamp on the harness, perhaps
secured with an adel clamp to the gear leg mount or something.
That way if it does break free, it can't get near the stick.

Just wanted to keep that thinking point out there because
anytime you do anything around the control surfaces, be
extra careful. That goes for people putting things down the
center tunnel as well.

Good point Tim. I was also thinking of trying to make some sort of bracket that I could hang off the cover plate that is under the seat.
Maybe something coming off the existing bolts on the Undercarriage mounts would be good as well. I will have a think about it.

Another thought I just had is to make some sort of tray arrangement so that the tray captures anything that falls off before it falls onto the control rods.
thanks all again.
