To the YakListas:
Many of you knew my Dad, Commander Blackjack Slyfield, USN who passed away the 12th of Jan. My sister and I arre putting together a celebration and Navy-style send-off for him on the 26th of May in McGregor, Iowa. (See attached link). I'm trying to put together a missing man flyover for The Commander for the 26th, Saturday. His hometown is beautiful, on the bluffs on the Mississippi River. The Natives are friendly, the beer is cold and the cheese curds are...plentiful. I want to extend an invitation to all in the Red Star Community, especially the ones in the Midwest, to come and fly. I can't promise much more than a tank of gas, discounted fuel prices (maybe) and excellent hospitality. Plus some beautiful areas to do low-levels, far away from the prying eyes of Radar. Join me to celebrate the passing of one of The Greatest Generation, a combat Vet of WWII, Korea and VietNam.

Chris,
I assure you are referring to some crashes. There are very close
clearances of control horns to air frame in the tail of the Yaks. Any kin
d of
foreign object that happen to get into that area, will almost certainly ja
m it.
Therefore it behooves one to check regularly for ANYTHING that might
migrate back there. This would include anything that might fall out of on
e's
pockets, particularly during acro. Although this is true of ANY airplane,
the Yak is very susceptible. Are "fix's".

G=99Day Pappy,
Thanks for that.
I am fully aware of foreign objects and I believe that that was the
reason for the crash in New Zealand.
Was it a screwdriver that jammed the elevator?
What I am trying to determine, is as I understand, a problem in the tail
sector, is it the elevator bellcrank?
I was told on Sunday that the Yaks tailplanes are now subject to a 25
hour inspection schedule due to some failure.
So what is the problem?
What is the fix?
Does anyone have any photographs relating to this?
Thanks and cheers,
Chris.

I addition to the =9Cforeign object=9D item there is a
problem with fatigue cracking of the elevator bellcrank (Yak 52) and
loss of elevator control. I do not know all the details but believe
there is an airworthiness directive on the subject. Suggest you contact
Richard Goode in the UK.

Hi Chris,
this problem is specific for the 52 and and you are running an 18 T ? If I remember
correctly Andrey Gluchov has told me that the replacement items are copied
in steel to avoid cracks in the elevator aluminium bell cranks. There must have
been a series which was not manufactured according to original design.
Cheers
Vic

G'day Vic,
Yes, I am running a 18T.
I have 2 friends with 52's and they raised the subject with me.
Plus my LAME has a number of 52's as well as 18's that he looks after and is
also interested in any information on the subject.
I have been nominated as the gopher to source the info. Bugger is'nt it.
Thanks and cheers,
Chris.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. I won't be able to attend his service, but I will be there in spirit. I am certain that he is already being welcomed "home" by those of the Greatest Generation who have gone before, my own father included. Please accept my most sincere condolances on your loss.
