I have assembled my O 200 and was told by. Aircraft Specialty to use "Hylomar AEROGRADE" and silk thread to put the case together. I now have several friends questioning if this is acceptable to use. I called Penn Yan Aero who has never heard of this. Anybody have any experience with this or should I rebuild the engine before I start to fly it?

I believe that is what Cont. recommends and that is the system I used in the early 90's. Hylomar works well on the valve covers also.

Glenn:
That is SCARY! Penn Yan does not know about that process... That is what happens when you replace OLD FARTS with Young Whipper-Snappers. The Knowledge goes out the door.
Hylomar AEROGRADE is just one of the High Temp RTV's being used. This is NOT the High Temp you get at Home Depot.
This is a sealant/adhesive that can handle the Full Range of Temps, The vibration and The OIL.
As for the silk thread... Well, that is old and not that good a process. The thread moves - kinks and causes leaks.
It is left out with the new sealant.
Also check out HINKLE Adhesives/Sealants.
Give a call to Continental or Lycomming, they have approved the process years ago.

Called TCM today and the whole truth is follow SIL99-2B which calls for loctite 515 as well as permatex #3 with the silk thread. I was told that what happens is the case will not hold the torque on the bolts causing the case to eventually loosen up and we know what happens then. He also said good luck getting it apart!
Thanks for all who posted as it lead me to follow my instinct and call the manufacturer

I'm sorry, I do not recall; is this engine going on an experimental or a GA aircraft?I'm sure you know where I'm going...
My next suggestion would be to call Lycoming or another engine shop and ask what they use? My O-320 Lycoming was assembled at an engine shop with ONLY a RVT sealant/adhesive. This was done back in 2000 and I have not seen any leaks.
The FAA does NOT care what sealant you use. And if they did the must have approved a few different sealants for all the different engine manufactures out there. Next point - Since YOU are are the engine shop YOU are the one certifying the engine and you are the one standing behind the warranty. Do what YOU feel works best. As long as it is an approved sealant who cares which one! Only You!
