I have piddled around with Continentals for years but am certainly no expert. I have seen the silk string used many times. I would not disassemble the engine unless you get a leak or problem. The silk thread was accepted practice for decades and while it may not be accepted as modern practice by Penn Yan, it should be fine.
BTW I have a problem with PENN YAN never having heard of this. It was done for decades and though they don't do it now. they should have seen and heard of it. Make me suspicious of their experience.
Blue Skies,
Steve D.
