I have been running High test 93 Oct. Auto fuel with Ethanol with no problems. i do not want to leave Ethanol based fuel in the tanks and carby for an extended periods. I have found a source for 92 Oct. Marine gas ( No Ethanol ) and used an Octane Booster to get it up a notch. It may run about 6 to 10 degrees cooler EGT but I really can't tell due to variable and bumpy conditions. It does not show signs of detonation and I really can not tell any difference in operations.
Has anyone out there had experience with Octane Boosters good or bad. I read a lot on the internet and get mixed signals. I also have talked to drag racers who say they can not run without it .
I am still having trouble getting #6 CHT down under 300 deg. all others at cruise and most power settings run 260 to 290. No. 6 is always 325 to 335. I have tried tilting the Carb, Installing baffles ( large and trimming 1/16 at a time ) to get the best low temps. I have changed the intake and calibrated the probe. I have run out of options. I have the smaller cowl intakes and believe there is just not enough air passing over the cylinders to cool the left side. The right side 1, 3, & 5 are all under 300 deg.

Comments please.

Bobby,
    I can't say much about octane boosters but I have been using 93 auto fuel (Shell) with ethanol for some time now with no effect. I add avgas to it for a 5:1 mixture just in case the auto fuel actual Octane is lower than posted. I also use Sta-Bil which is claimed to help protect things like fuel tanks as well as lengthen the life of the fuel. Finally, I keep avgas in one tank and always take off and land with it so the rest of the system is always filled with Avgas during storage.
    Since doing this all signs of spark plug fouling have vanished. It is clearly a cleaner burning combination than Avgas alone.
    If you have access to Avgas, I would suggest using some of it as a Octane booster.

    As for the heat. do you have wheel pants? Since I put them on, it seems that the CHT's have dropped a bit. When the weather gets warmer, I will do a more controlled test. I expect this is due to the slightly higher airspeed for the same power level. I also put insulation on the exhaust system for other reasons but that also seemed to help slightly, perhaps it lowers the temp rise of the air going out and thus reduces the pressure in the lower cowling slightly.
