Can anyone tell me if there is such a thing as a "Portable transponder". I have a small antique airplane with no electrical system & would often like to have a transponder but I don't really want to add a small battery. I don't mind adding the small transponder type antenna. I am trying to find out if there is a transponder out there powered by it's own rechargeable batteries - like a handheld comm radio or a portable GPS. Any info here would be very appreciated. Thanks. Johnny

Hello John, See this web site:

Note that a true portable transponder for use in the U. S may be a real
tough problem to solve because of the TSO requirements. Also note the
requirements of 14 CFR 91.413.
The sailplane people work in this arena -- just google transponder for
sailplanes. Here is one source:

gather and understand knowledge."
