Hello Kolbers,

I work with a couple A&P’s who now use Stewards to cover the Supercubs they work on, and they will never go back to Stits. There now is another product out there that might be a good choice for light aircraft called “Oratex.” Developed in Germany this covering product is per-colored and other wise sound similar to Stewards. Folks in Germany and England are using it on LSA. I found a distributor in Canada, but so far can’t find one in the US. Has anyone heard of Oratex?

There was a discussion on Oratex over on http://homebuiltairplanes.com a while ago, I'm sure a search for "Oratex" will bring up the thread. The late Mark Stull got a sample kit and played with it. As I recall, he wasn't crazy about it but it may be because he was using something lighter. It needs no paint; you apply a heat sensitive where it will touch the aircraft frame; let it dry, drape it over the wings, use iron to stick it down and to shrink it. I've been thinking about for the new ultralight I'm designing as I hate painting.

Oratex is used here in the uk with substantial claimed weight saving over conventional covering systems i am not so sure that irt would be such a weight saving on my kolb with no fuselage as such to cover but for some body who is struggling to meet a weight limit the saved weight could be vital . I would certainly consider it If I should ever have to recover my mk111 as when weighing time comes around I am pretty close to if not over the uk microlight weight limit

Hi,
Oratex has been around for a little while in the UK and there are a few planes around covered with it.

Main advantages are ease of application and the weight saving as the colour is in the Oratex thus saving the weight and the trouble of painting

Cheers

I think I need to read up more on this paint system. I am recovering the main frame assy. after some mod's. Unless I see something worth while that I can afford I will stick with my Flex Bon house paint and clear coat it. I used it 8 yro and it still looks good and no problem. Lets face it retirement sucks and can't afford thing like we did.
