Is there any reason it has to be the "bed type"? The new Zenith mounts are designed to be compatible with the old mounts.
I would highly suggest the retrofit. Having flown both types, the ring mount is far superior.
Good luck,

Hi John,
I am building a 701 ,and am about ready to hang the engine, a 912 ULS. That I bought with a Titan
Tornado So I don't believe I will need most of the parts that come
in Zeniths (firewall forward package) Hopefully, just the mount and cowling. I'm new to the 701
so don't really know what to do . I thought the bed mount would be cheaper , and the 701 has been flying
for 20 years with them so I figured --try that--. Any advice form you or anyone that has been there
would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with John. I built two 701s. The first had the old bed mount and the second I used the new ring mount. Much, much smoother operation. but, I'm sure it costs more. There is an aftermarket company in CA that produces a ring that is a few hundred dollars cheaper than the Rotax ring.
Good luck.

Frank.
I don't know if the engine you have has the Rotax air intake or not. For the 912uls it is recommended by Rotax, to get the 100hp out of the engine, and it also gives you carb heat. The air box clears the ring mount but not the mount that goes between the ring and firewall.
Zenith just tells you to toss out that thousand dollar part and put on a couple of K&N filters. But that is like running with the carb heat on all the time.
The bed mount will clear the Rotax supplied air box. Giving you cold air for flying and carb heat if you need it.

I have the old Skyshop 701 Rotax FWF which uses the bed mount and the Rotax airbox. But their plans show that you have to modify the airbox to make it fit. The photos they provide show the center section being sliced out and rotated about 15-20 degrees such that the two intake tubes are at 90 degrees relative to the carb outlets. Pictures (Matronics willing) attached.
FWIW: I asked Michael Heintz about the (new at the time) ring mount. He had flown both and did not see a world of difference. Also I am not sure if the new mount is compatible with a cowl intended for the bed mount.

Bullyhawk sells an aftermarket Rotax style ring mount.
The newer firewall forward kit was developed to stop the tail mount cracking resulting from the 100hp engine. If you are using the 912ULS, go with ring mount.
I am currently flying the bed mount with my 80hp engine but will be updating to the ring mount next year.

Craig, and Frank. According to Roger (when I asked a few years ago) the bed mount/ring mount cowls are mutually exclusive. Both are still available from Zenith.
