Here is another homebuilder 101 question. About 25% of the time when I am using my pneumatic riveter I get a smile shaped mark around a part of the rivet on the material below. It is about fingernail deep, I can just catch the end of my fingernail on it. You can see them in the photo - this one is on the spar at a rib flange. I have tried everything I can think of, replace riveter nose piece, pulled gun away as I am riveting, etc and I still get them. The air pleasure at the compressor is at 75-80 psi, anything less and the rivet gun won't cycle. Any suggestions on how I can prevent them? Do I need to worry about the riveter marks/scratchs on the spar?

What riveter are you using? The Harbor Freight riveter I used did not cause this very often but I think it would cycle at a lower pressure.

Don 

  

 Check you are using the right size nose piece  

 Check the nose hase been modified correctly note recess  not to deep.

 Make sure the rivet tool is not Bouncing when the rivet  breaks.

 What sort of rivet puller are you using 

 straight Pneumatic (probably go off with a  bang)

 or Pneumatic over Hydraulic (not as harsh )

 Check pressure should only need 90-100psi

Maybe get a piece of 1/8" flat nylon stock and drill a 1/8" hole in the center.  Put it over the rivet mandrel first, then put the puller over the mandrel and squeeze.  I think the nylon will be hard enough to allow the rivet to be properly set. 



You might also try pushing *harder* on the rivet squeezer when you pull them.  And make sure that you're always straight and perpendicular to the surface.

Hi Don,

     

     There are two problems I think you have.  Fixing either one will     prevent your smilies.

     

     1.  You aren't holding the riveter perpendicular to the work.  That     is why the smilie is only a semi-circle.  One side of the rivet tool     is hitting the work piece while the other isn't.  If you can get the     riveter really straight up and down it won't leave this kind of     mark.

     

     2.  It may be that your nose piece has sharp edges that make the     marks.  You can reduce the edges with a file, a Dremel tool with a     stone, or if you have a metal lathe you can turn the edges down with     either a tool, a file, or some abrasive paper/cloth.  The more     rounded the edges of your nose piece the less likely you are to cut     into the work piece with the edge.
