Hello, folksI am building a CH601-HD, but want to incorporate some of the firewall changes from the 601XL and 650... Can someone provide the measurements (including material and thickness) of 6B7-4 (slide cover) and 6B7-5 (steering box slide). Thanks muchCarlos CH601-HD, starting to look like and airplane (if you have enough imagination)

Carlos,

I tried that using the same material as the firewall and wasn't all that pleased with it. I removed the slides and only have the jeep boots on the inside. Haven't flown it yet but there is no restriction of movement from the slides now.

Hello, Ron

I am almost done with the parts, so I'll give it a shot - but thanks for the comment, I'll keep it in mind.
Congratulations on the milestone and good luck

I used the shutter idea but didn’t bend the dog leg into the fixed portions. Instead my shutters were 0.025 inch thick while the fixed covers were flat but spaced out from the firewall with 0.035. As I was designing my solution I discovered the obvious: the shutters have to be able to move left and right (a small amount) as well as up and down. Left and right because the arms on the front gear tube pull the rods left or right as you turn the nose wheel.

A side point:

Carlos, are your steering rods threaded over their full length? If so then the threads drag/rasp on the movable metal shutters as the nose wheel turns left or right. I recall these solutions from other builders:

- fill in the threads with J-B Weld
- cover the rods in thin-walled metal tubing. One builder recommended hollow metal arrow shafts
- cover the rods with thin shim stock clamped fore and aft with a metal wire tie (I used the walls of a beer can for the shim stock)
- grind the thread off the sections of the rods that touch the shutters from a full left to a full right turn (only a little over an inch of travel as I recall)

The newer rods I have seen are only threaded on the ends with smooth metal in between so this isn’t a problem.

I would suggest that the rod is only threaded on the ends and only enough thread to get the rod end on. 4130 steel rod is cheep, strong and easy to get at Aircraft spruce and others.
