Howdy all-

Has anyone had any success using this website:

http://www.epanelbuilder.com/

I've registered, downloaded the required Macromedia app, supposedly started a project,  couldn't get any instruments to show in the library (after struggling for 15 minutes to get a panel template to show) and then couldn't open that project next time I tried, and generally run into more problems than any app (out of hundreds- this stuff is NOT new to me!) I've ever tried to use before.  Then tried to get assistance, been issued "tickets" (what ever happened to customer support via e-mail, fer chrissake!!) and am genuinely frustrated and annoyed after over 3 hours for 2 days of trying to accomplish anything.  Must not be holding my left foot in the correct position or the moon is out of phase.  Anyone else with horror/success stories with this?

Suggestions for alternatives welcome- maybe I'll just go back to AutoCAD and my previous excellent panel cutting service....

Mark -

Are you pining again to build another panel? If you know AutoCAD like I
think you know it, why try something new? Smile)

How is it going with the flying?

Cheers,

John

Howdy List!

Regarding previous posts about my problems with epanelbuilder:

Bill VonDane has been in touch and it appears epanelbuilder is too much for my slo dial-up connection to handle   But much to his credit he is working to make it more accessible for those of us still in the 20th century.  It really looks like a useful tool, but just not so much for those of us who prefer putting ga$ in our planes instead of the pockets of the Internet mogul$. (sigh)  Maybe one day when I get rich like everybody else, I'll be able to get all that advertising at breathtaking speed!   Cool

No ill-will intended for epanel, but at least now I know what the problem is- my penny pinching!  8-(

Mark,
I have a DSL line, so I didn’t have the same difficulties you did.  However, the site is a little difficult to use.  First, it really doesn’t work at all until you pay (minimum is $40 for 3 months).  This turns on most of the functionality, including the ability to save your project so that you can see it and work on it again, or print it out.
Navigating around the site is a bit odd.  Things don’t always work in the way a MS Windows user would expect.  Second, there are a few common items missing – for example, I can’t find any type of Hobbs meter in the libraries.  Also, most of the items I am planning to use in my panel are missing information (electrical load, weight, cost, etc), so the summary pages are pretty much useless.  Nevertheless, it’s a pretty quick way to do several conceptual layouts of an instrument panel when you are trying to decide how to arrange things.  Just remember to “SAVE” before printing or closing!

Mark,
How did the site work for you in demo mode, i.e. before you paid your $39?

I've been using the demo mode to layout my panel for fun, until I'm ready to committ the $$ and time to make a hardware copy, and it seems to work well. The "ticket" system of communication seems like a solution looking for a problem and is cumbersome. But I found the guy who runs the site (Bill Dane, if memory serves) is responsive, and obviously overworked. The panel I'm using (Glasair FutureVision) was not in the inventory of templates and I emailed the file from Panel Planner to him. It was up on EPanel's site within a day or two and needed only minor tweaks to get to the right scale, which EPanel accomplished quickly.

if EPB worked for you in demo mode, despite limited features, and it stumbles after you subscribed, then I would want to hear some answers from Bill Dane.

Thanks for the heads-up,
John

Hi John- sounds like you connect at something higher than 49K- my dial-up seems to be the biggest problem- I couldn't even play with the demo except to (finally!) load panel template & got no further- also had not subcribed at the time...

Done well, the ticket system can be a great help to the
customers, since it helps keep focus on the problem. Done
poorly, it can be a pain. I don't recall using Bill VonDane's
system, so I can't comment on it.

Bill has been very helpful for me and has added items as I have
requested them. The ticket system worked very well for me. Though sometimes
it may be a day or so in getting anwsers. No big deal to me I'm not in a
hurry. Although beware, the accual size of my panel (Aerocomp C6) vs e-panel
was not exactly to scale as I found out. The width and height seemed to jibe
I think it was the rounded contours that threw me off. Bill offered to fix
that too but I did'nt think it worth the effort since the program is mainly
for preliminary design. And very good it is. I changed my accual layout
after I saw layed out in the real world as I'm sure most do.

I tried to use it, but gave up. It's easier to just have someone download the Van's DWG drawing and modify it to suite you needs, and get it cut with a waterjet machine. That's what I did after wasting a week trying to use epanelbuilder website. FWIW

I agree,

I had mine done by "affordablepanels.com" . Fabian was very good and the
products are first rate and prices were some of the best.

Mark, re dial-up, I live in the stix and dealt with dial up until I couldn't stand it anymore. Researched satellite and found it too expensive. Discovered a local ISP who had a repeater antenna atop a local mountain that could beam wireless service to me at around 400 kbps for $40/month. Had to put up my own antenna (hole in the ground for "donated" old PG&E pole). When I turned it on, I felt like a cave man butchering the velociraptor and getting into a Corvette. After 18 months, still giggling everytime I go online.

We implemented a ticketing system at work for our computer support,
and quite frankly it has been a godsend. Much easier to keep track of
things and ensure a consistent communication chain with history for
everyone here. If you forget, all you have to do is go look at the
ticket instead of trying to track through hundreds of e-mails or little
post-it notes from phone conversations. Things have drastically improved.
