All,
Any easy way to prevent the o-ring seal from sliding down the rim while mating the other half of the rim? The directions on page -15- do not exactly work real well.

I don't recall the trick I used for the o-ring but it is a bit tricky to do. I think I worked in a circular pattern slightly tightening up the bolts and making sure the o-ring did not get pinched as I went (pulled it free). My memory is a little sparse on this step though because it was about five years ago.
One thing you might want to do after you get the rim halves mated but before inflating the tires is grease the o-ring. I and another builder each had one wheel that would not seal. Coincidentally both were the nose wheels. A little white lithium grease spary on the o-ring of the offending wheel and neither of us have had any more leaks.

Hi Doug,
I just found online the directions for the 5" series rims, and.... I got it to work. They state roll the o-ring to the bead part of the rim. It stays there enough to get the other rim half bolted. I will go back an put some of the lithium grease on it before I finish everything.
Also, what tire pressure did you start out with?

It doesn't take much pressure to fill these tires, only a couple of psi I think. I don't specifically fill them to a pressure now. I usually just fill them enough so they keep their shape.

It helps to have two people when doing the o-rings.
I'm using the 21" tires at 8PSI which makes them about 19".

Bought tubes for the second 701 and used the o-rings for the first. Putting the o-rings in was a two man job for us.

Raymond, Tubes vs no tubes is one of those topics that is never really settled (green vs red scotchbrite or prime vs no prime, etc) Personally, with no leaks after greasing the nose wheel o-ring, I don't see any advantage to putting tubes in the tires. On the other side of the argument, some people will insist that it is impossible to seal a tubless tire with a split rim.
Basically, try it without a tube and if you have good luck like I did, great. If not, tubes are available (but I don't know where from). As you suggested, there is probably lots of discussion about this in the archives. If not on the 701/801 list archives then likely on the old main Zenith list.

The possible problem with tubeless tires is pretty simple. Low
pressure, hard landing/bad hit, it can blow the bead. Whereas with a
tube, that can't happen. I don't know what kind of tires Zenith now
supplies, but they used to supply tube type tires and recommend using
them tubeless. I never thought that was a good idea or the right way to

Tubless tyres have the advantage if you have low pressure and heavy
breaking you don't get valves being torn out of the tube resulting in a
flat tyre.
But as larry said if you land hard enough to bend the rim the tyre will
go flat with tube less. But this would be the least of your problems as
your plane would probably be wrecked any way.
I bent my aircraft including straightening out the under carridge and am
still using the same wheels axles tires etc.
I have had two valves rip out before I changed to tubeless.
The second went flat and was undetected till I landed with the swerve to
the left and the wing coming to rest 8" from a barbed wire fence.

Thanks to all who replied. As was stated there are merits to both
sides. Am I understanding correctly that the tubes and tires move on
the rim and cause stem problems and that the tubeless still move but
don't cause problems because they don't loose their seal? Do the
tubeless go out of balance from the tire moving after while?
I will be using 8" rims with tubes on my 750 mains and the 6" on my
nose. Just trying to figure out if I want a tube in my nose gear.

I don't believe you will have a problem with the tubes if you buy
industrial tubes, with steel stems. Don't buy the ones for lawn
tractors. If the tire manufacturer had meant for it to be tubeless then
they won't have printed "For use with tubes only" on the tires. At
least that's what mine say. The newer ones may be different. Larry

Thanks for the suggestion. I have the tubes that Z provides with their
kit, but if I have problems I'll definitely look into that.
