Hi,
I'm looking at a used 701 with a Rotax UL 80hp.I welcome opinions on whether or not this engine is adequate for the STOL performance for which the 701 is designed. The plane is a 1100# MTOW model.

I have the 80 hp 912/ 3 blade warp on my 701 and it is adaquate on wheels. I'm surrounded by water and plan on building a set of amphibs in a year or two and will have to upgrade the powerplant before I try flying two-up with floats. Lets face it, there is no such thing as enough power on a float plane.

What would I gain with the 100hp? Probably a couple of MPH in cruise and might get off the ground a little faster when heavy. I would not rule out a 701 just because it only had the 80hp. The 80hp is actually a better engine than the 100hp, not as hard on the airframe. Yes, it has less power but is thus a bit smoother.
I guess it really depends on what you are trying to do with the plane. I think you'll find both engines give pretty good STOL performance on the 701.

One consideration is the mandatory use of 91+ octane fuel in the 100 hp if using auto gas and Rotax wants it fresh and in season. Not many cars today really need premium fuel so it can be a bit hard to get it fresh in a small town. I live near a couple of retirement communities where there are a lot of high end cars that use premium, so it's not a problem for me. Where my plane is hangared, which is a small town someone bought premium for their Rotax powered gyro and when they started dumping it in the plane it stunk and was like lumpy. With the 80 HP you can use regular.

Personally, I think the 100 hp Rotax is almost too much for the  701.  That is, if you can have too much horsepower.

I have had the 80 hp for 5 years, and have never wanted or needed anything larger. Uses regular gas, and it really is a short takeoff plane.

This video on YouTube which has gotten 10,000 hits shows a no-wind 80 hp takeoff at 1000 foot elevation. I did not rotate until 50 mph. Could have rotated much sooner (35).

Also depends on what altitudes you intend to fly at. My home airport is at about 6ooo ft and is surrounded by 10 to 11 thousand foot peaks.

I fly similar altitudes like Craig does... And sincerely, In some very few particular occasions, I will love to have a 914, and also a foot more span in each wing will also help... Smile
But I think there are too much gadgets to go wrong in the 914...
I rather fly, planning out in advance with the 100 hp.
About 400 hrs with no problems, only the normal mantainance and fun...
Gary.

The big diference is in climb, and in high landing strips, highr cruise speed is not a goal, is Not a racing airplane...

Ben, are you still flying that ford powered chariot? That was the ultimate 801...
Beautiful plane too, if a 701/801 can be considered good looking.... Sort of like a camel.....
