Hi,
When checking the aircraft (without the tailplanes installed) I
discovered that the vertical trim motor sounds like it is running
without load briefly just after changing trim direction.
Further examination revealed that this is caused by the friction device
in the trim mechanism. This thing is (by design) out of the center of
the trim bellcrank, and therefore it bends/realigns a bit before it
starts pulling through the friction slot.
Looking at it when changing trim direction repeatedly, I observed that
the whole frame torques a bit due to the friction and change of angle of
the center bolt. I guess this is normal, but of course at the end it may
cause metal fatique.
There is no hint in the manual how to set this friction contraption,
neither is there an explanation why we need it. For small trim
deviations the thing is useless anyway because of the slack in the
system due to bending and torqueing of the various components.
Has anyone any insight in the purpose of this friction device and how we
are supposed to set it? Have others also observed the slack in the
system and bending/torqueing of the frame?

Hi Frans,
when I built Europa No. 573, I coated the friction washer and slot with graphite grease after
noticing that the trim motor appeared to stick/strain when moving, it did not make a huge difference but enough to smooth it out slightly,

Like Steve I had the same problem in 2003. After some discussion with Andy
Draper we came to the same solution, grease it.

Hmm, is greasing a friction device not negating its purpose? Anyway, if
it can be done without adverse effects, I will grease it.
Did you see my email with comments about the incorporation of mod77 (and
questions about the push rod)?

Mine moved initially, until I worked out my link arm was a little too long
which
Was causing it to jam at full travel. I shortened the link and the bending
stopped

Hi Frans,
I believe the main purpose of this friction device is to prevent all the aerodynamic loads on the tabs to be supported by the little plastic linkage and gears of the RC Allen servo. It also prevents a catastrophic failure to occur in case of breakage of this linkage between the servo and the friction device. So obviously it is a very important safety feature.
On my aircraft I once observed an important slack in the friction system which was due to the M5x60 bolt and M5 check nut on the bellcrank TS03 becoming loose. This was easily fixed with Loctite. I also found that adjusting the spring preload to the minimum and greasing the friction surfaces was better.
