There seems to be a good amount of expertise on this list in regards to electronics, so I figured I’d ask.

I have a GoPro camera (3.5mm stereo mic input) that I want to get sound into from the plane’s audio system. Is there a y cable that can be plugged into a plane’s ¼” headphone jack that will give me a female ¼” jack and a 3.5mm female? I would think that this cable would somehow have to change the impedance to the 3.5mm jack, but that’s where my knowledge stops. I was also thinking if something like this existed, what about using normal stereo earbuds under my helmet plugged into this cable rather than purchasing CEP. Does anyone know how CEP is able to make this work? Looks like they are connecting directly to the existing earphones in the helmet.

Hi Tom,

CEP's are so cheap and available on e-bay that shouldn't use something else, also keep in mind that if your earbuds fail in flight you will not be able to listen the helment speakers. There is an audio cable section in aircraft spruce:

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/av/headsetx_adapters_taperecorder.html

Then again just play with it on the ground long and behold before you take into the air you don't want to have communications malfunction in the air.

If you are flying a 2 seater, just put an inxepensive MP3 recorder attahced to the rear headset jack. you can use software to supperimpose the sound, plus most people prefer music for extended period of the video pepper for the imporatant moments when you want to get things across like your engine start, radio calls and some engine full power climbs(or dives).

Good luck.

With my GoPro I use a lapel mic that has it's own battery and insert inside the earphone of my headset. The plug end plugs directly into the camera and provides excellent audio. Pics up all intercom and radio talk. When the camera is on it's recording (just don't forget to turn the lapel mic on also - ask me how I know). Works great.

Best,
Scott
