Hello,
I just bought and flew back Cliff Gromer's 601HDS from upstate NY down to GA. This is the Popular Mechanics plane from 1997. It has a few squawks but is very pretty and flies nice.
On landing on our grass strip I discover that the bungie main struts are very stiff. The roll out is a pogo stick ride. Now the heavier planes with spring gear or oleo struts don't jolt like this down the runway. Even the Kitfox III with bungie gear wasn't this rough.
I can push down on one wing to lift the other main off of the ground and shake the plane and still that main strut does not move. Cliff says this is normal and that it is stiff.
Is this everyone's experience? It seems like the mains should give a little. Has anyone tried softening them up somehow?
Thanks in advance,
Mark Napier

My HDS is also stiff. I don't think it's a good idea to make it less stiff.

I have a 601 HDS that I bought 3 years ago from the builder. Actually it is painted just like your plane because the builder liked the paint job on the Popular Mechanics 601 HDS.
The builder of my plane also did not like the stiffness so he only put one bungee on each main wheel but I was concerned about having just one bungee so I asked him to add the second bungee before I bought it. You are right about the ride on a grass strips. It is a pogo stick ride !!!
I do love the 601 HDS though. I have about 238 hours on it and it is great. I put VGs on the wings and I have convinced myself the the stall speed has been lowered to 45-47 mph. It is a great little plane.
I have the 80 HP 912 and I am considering upgrading to 100 HP. That would truly be a hoot.
