Quote: | How to unplug a seriously plugged heated pitot tube:
I recently purchased a known plugged p-tube [for my Lancair project] for a
song.
Cursory investigation revealed seller/owner's verdict correct; severely
plugged. No known reason. Shop air was no help. Probably a p-cover would
have been good idea.
The usual safety-wire probing accomplished nothing. Researched the p-tube
porting and channeling on internet for answers. Nothing. Checking for an
"organic plug" [baked bug] I added apple vinegar with 2 foot head pressure
overnight. Meniscus level of vinegar level dropped but not relief or flow,
and copper innards brightened. A few more heated experiments, then tried
battery acid [HCl]. What the heck... After a 3 day soak, the plug blew
out. The blackened particles resembled "the alien movie creature, but not
identifiable." Called the factory in OH, and related a new-to-them
technique of removing the obstacle. Good feeling to re-invent the wheel, a
bit. BTW, the manufacturing process and subsequent internal road map
knowledge IS proprietary... short of destroying the $600 p-tube.
Happy improvising,
Mike
