I have been talking off line with one of our members and he brought up the subject of the hollow push rods. I pulled the SI 8 and read through it and call my dealer. It would cost me about 1K to install the hollow pushrods and lifters, plus it would put me down for a while. I'm not sure of the benefit. Lycoming and Cont has been doing it that way for fifty-sixty years. It make sense to use the oil to take away the heat from the heads.

Has anybody installed the hollow push rods.

I'm just coming up to five hours on my engine and still battling the heating problem. I'm a 1/2" from the ends of the runway and have to shut the engine off at the ends as the temp come up to 302 by the time I get there and the oil temp are below 104.

Lycoming uses hollow push rods for a couple of reasons:1 - Cheaper to manufacture
2 - Lighter in weight
3 - They do not have to do a Chem/Phys on the material
4 - They do not have to anneal the material for machining and then harden it after machining
5 - The ends of the push rods can be tumble polished
6 - Easier to make matching lengths 
But - HEAT TRANSFER was never a consideration because the contact surfaces for heat transfer are too small to make a difference.  And  - Once the OIL has reached operation temp the push rods have become heat saturated and no additional mass will make ANY difference in cooling. 


Save your money and look elsewhere for your cure for high heat problems.
If you would not mind repeating the particulars of your plane and engine configuration we could work off-list to cover a few points.

I am not trying to be a wise guy here, but I would just note that the Jabiru is not an oil cooled engine; it is an air cooled engine. So fussing about trying to cool the oil some way is possibly looking at the wrong issue. Also, looking at Ly-cons is not helpful.  There is some way to flow air better, even while taxiing.   Beware of "fixes" for problems that are best solved by airflow. That includes the water cooled heads, "better" carbs and huge oil coolers.

Even though it is air cooled the oil does a large amount of cooling. The hollow pushrod conversion is to get a better supply of oil to the rocker bushings.
It also removes the external tubes that feed the oil to the rockers. Only relevent to later Hydraulic engines. with fine finned heads, not retro fittable to early hydraulic engines.
Cowling is important for good temps. Different props can also cause problems with cooling on the ground

The hollow push rods get oil to the rockers and push rod ends through the lifters.Don't think cooling was the issue there.
