Aircraft: Europa Tri-Gear
Engine: Rotax 912 UL 80 Hp 350 Hours
Propellor: Airmaster AP332

For over a year I have been trying to track down noise/vibration issues. I have done all the things that seem obvious: carb balancing, throttle/choke cables, checking exhaust system, airframe/cowling, servicing the propeller etc. but I can not find anything obvious. The symptoms are strange: take off and climb are normal and the initial cruise is fine: prop in cruise, 26 inches MFP and a steady 105Kts at 12.5 litres an hour. Anytime from 10 to 40mins after entering the cruise the noise starts, quietly at first and then gradually louder with a slight vibration. It is difficult to describe, more of a low frequency buzz than a mechanical clatter but it does increase in volume. If I select ‘climb’ pitch the noise stops but returns when the cruise is re-established. Changing pitch manually can reduce the noise slightly but it does not go away.

Bud Yearly has given me a comprehensive list of specific items to check which I am in the process of doing, but I am interested to know if anyone has experienced anything similar with their Rotax. Although my engine is quite low hours it is 14 years old so I suspect a gearbox overhaul may well be required.

I have seen many people think it was an engine issue, but really turned out to be the fuselage and the wind doing weird things in gaps or from fittings.

Sorry, due to an error in my profile the email address is incorrect. My correct email is gaxuk2001(at)gmail.com

Graham: The prop is an Airmaster AP 322 Constant Speed fitted with 3 x 63" tapered blades.

Roger: Yes, I have been checking the airframe/cowlings very carefully but have not found anything obvious yet. I did not make any changes to the aircarft prior to the noise commencing but I am still looking!

Gordon,
We had a similar problem on a Paradise P-1.(912ULS) The vibration would start at power reduction and would continue at cruise. If you go to full power it would smooth right out.
We thought it might be the prop so we changed it to no avail. It still did it. We checked every part of the airframe and engine (bolts, cracks, mounts, etc). I even took the airplane up shut down the engine and flew the aircraft thru stall to almost VNE and there was no vibration in the airframe so we were convinced it was engine related.
This was a long story going on for many months of frustration but to summarize we finally sent the gearbox off to Lockwood for a rebuild as a last resort. THAT solved the problem.
So yes, it might be the gearbox.
