Hello Bob, et al:
I found and purchased a NOS "ACK ELT", w/o a fixed [fuselage] antenna. I plan to install in the Lancair [composite beast].
Your opinion please on whether to go dirt cheap and build an antenna to install, or buy the OEM [ACK] version?
Ques. #2: Is it always best to use the ELT's manufacturers antenna design, rather than someone elses, that looks comparable/compatible? I have a Garrett ELT antenna & base {p/n 615363-1} with a couple of tuner-coils (?) imbeded in epoxy in the base.... Haven't found any info on the net.
Thanks in advance,
Mike W.

Mike, I had this conversation with the local FSDO about two months ago. The antenna is part of the TSO for the ELT. Even on an experimental it's not legal to put on anything but the manufacturers antenna. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Hi Rick,
I kinda' suspected the same from not finding any info on BN's site or his book. And, that's why I asked. Probably less expensive [to buy the OEM item] in the long run.
Thanks very much for your quick reply.

Hmmm....

I smell a rat.

With all due respect to having to live with the local sherriff, my understanding is that the ONLY thing required to actually be TSO'd on an experimental is a GPS planned for use in termminal operations. Other things needed to be TSO compliant, but that is different from wearing a sticker.

Thoughts, Bob?

From a purely technical perspective:

If this were a legacy 121.5 "hope it will work"
type ELT, then any VHF comm antenna would perform as well
as the 'stock 'antenna supplied with the ELT.

The modern two-frequency ELTs require either two
separate antennas (like those on the Beechjet)

[img]cid:.0[/img]

Or a muti-band antenna tailored to the task. It's likely that
ANY 121.5/406 antenna would work just fine but given
the relative level of understanding by any individual likely
to take regulatory notice, likelihood of getting a
substitution approved is very low.

They are skilled in the reading of labels and checking
of boxes on forms, not skilled judging the suitability
of any substitution to a task.

From the regulatory perspective:

Irrespective of the technical validity of any substitute
you might find, the risk for having it become some
kind of . . . uh . . . bump in the road is not zero.

The term TSO appears 52 times in the latest version of
Part 91 just downloaded. It speaks to all manner of
panel mounted electro-whizzies including ELTs. TSO's
are becoming a kind of executive order that exerts
a force "for our own good." Resistance is futile, we
will be assimilated.

TSO requirements are not necessarily associated with the airframe
certification, but in order to operate in the national airspace system
certain "approved" items are needed, such as ELTs and transponders. The
requirement is in Part 91 (general operating and flight rules), not Part
23 or some other airworthiness requirement so it's the same for all
aircraft.

Many early ELTs had very primitive circuit designs in order to operate
at 121.5 and 243 MHz, which resulted in antennas that didn't look like
traditional quarter-wave whips at either frequency. The antenna is part
of the design.

Also, if you are to operate an aircraft with an ELT installed after
March 1998, in order to be "approved" it has to be certified to TSO
C91a, not the older C91. Many of the bargain ELTs in flymarkets work,
but are illegal to use once they have been removed from the aircraft in
which they were originally installed. If you have a C91 ELT there had
better be a logbook entry documenting its installation prior to 1998.

Thanks for the info. Good point as well.
My NOS ACK ELT was never installed in an ac, but is certified to C91a,
fortunately.
Luck of the Irish.. And an OEM antenna is on order.
