Greetings,
A couple of my avionics (GNS430, GMA240 and KI-209 specifically) have pins labelled "Dimmer" and "Lighting Hi/Lo".
I'm wondering what the device expects on these pins and havent been able to find out anywhere on the web. I'm thinking Dimmer must be some kind of way of variying the input voltage to vary the brightness of the display and Lighting Hi/Lo is just +14V/GND. Does anyone know?

One the 430 what the device is expecting on those pins is configured in the setup menu. But you can have it follow a light bus (on/off/dim) or use the built in eye to automatically dim the display, buttons and knobs.
Sounds like you need a copy of the install manuals. I believe you can download them from Garmin.

Thanks Tim, I have the install manuals but what is a light bus exactly? A variable 0-14v supply?

It can be a simple 14 V tap from your NAV lights, or it can be a variable voltage from a dimmer. You select it in setup for what ever you have to use, 5, 14, 28 etc. or PHOTO to just use the internal sensor. And you can control the knobs and display separately. I'm not sure but I don't think it will follow a PWM dimmer.
Section 5.3.7 in the "W" manual.

Sacha,
430W P4001 pins 39 and 40 are for lighting. Pin 39 is connected to
the dimmed lamp voltage and pin 40 to ground.
The Main Lighting configuration page selects whether that dimmed lamp
voltage is a maximum of 28V, 14V or 5V. You also have the choice of
auto dimming with ambient light conditions.
Connect the dimmer voltage even if you don't plan to use it.
Unfortunately, that was not done on my Cessna. The overhead red lamp
that illuminates the instrument panel affects the 430Ws idea of the
conditions, so the autodim function works very poorly.
There is a complicated configuration to match the rate of dimming that helps.
Let me know if you can't find a copy of the 430W installation manual.
I have rev G and can email it to you off list. Or perhaps, Bob, do
you want to put it in your archives ?

Tim and Jeff, thanks a lot for your replies.
For the moment (as i dont have a variable voltage supply) I'll just hook up the lighting bus to +14 volts and use the auto dimming function on the GNS430.
What about the King KI-209 "Dimmer" pin? Is your understanding that is also meant to be connected to a variable voltage supply? They don't mention anything about it in the manual so its a "standard" thing.
Since the current consumption is low, I suppose I could build a variable voltage supply by simply putting a variable resistor in series with the Dimmer circuit. Does this sound like it would work?

Does anyone have an example of the type of dimmer that would be up to this task?

One of these will likely meet your requirement. There are many other
similar products available from other sources.
