Is white the best color for a wig wag?
It made some sense not to diminish tungsten light with a color filter
and of course LED research seems to be concentrated on white (all
colors) light. However I wonder if a less natural yellow-green color
from LED's might make a better wig wag during daytime. For example my
master warning is a 10mm LED that flashes red and green (no pause
between colors) and I perceive it as more attention getting than
white or a single color. Eyes tend to be more sensitive to yellow green.

Good question. It would be an interesting
experiment. I suspect that color has little
effect on ideal viewing conditions: pitch
dark background on clear night and no ground
clutter. A worst case in my experience was
flying over Wichita where the approaching aircraft
was slightly below me and immersed in a 'sea of
sodium vapor' street lights and neon signs.

Of course, risk for colliding with the airplane
was low. Had we been at the same altitude, the
amount of visual clutter would have been much
lower . . . but I'm thinking white would offer
the greatest differential in perception.
