Hey All,
I posted on this site a week ago about a right elevator. It turns out that my canopy is sprung and now I need a sliding canopy as well. Does anyone have one that they would like to sell?

Yes on all accounts. I had an oil leak, we thought we fixed it. I was about to go on a trip that was over 1,000 miles and wanted to make sure the leak was fixed so ran the engine up to about 2,000 rpm (over the usual 1500 for mags). The canopy was all the way back since I live in FL and it is hot here. It obviously lifted out of the track at the back which is the weak link. If I had locked it just behind the pilot seat like I do when it is cold it would not have happened.
Bottom line with a sliding canopy, at least like mine, do not get the prop over 1500 rpm or you may loose it.

G'day Earnest,
Sorry to hear about your misfortune ... I know how much work goes into that slider and empennage. Was it because the retainers let go at the back of the canopy track? Is there something we can all learn from this?

Thanks for responding, it actually is a HRII that I put the sliding canopy on. I think we have one spotted but will let you know if that doesn't work out. Where are you located? I am in Jacksonville, FL.

Ernest,
If you had your canopy "back" instead of "over", I assume you've got an F-1 instead of an HRII. If so, I doubt you're interested, but I have a 90% complete (needs counterweights and fiberglass) set of elevators for an HRII (0.016 skins).

I had an unfortunate incident today where while I was running the engine
up on my Rocket with the canopy back the canopy took a departure from the
plane and hit my right elevator. Does anyone have one that they would
like to sell? Right elevator that is.

I had an engine failure in my Harmon Rocket (Lyc IO 540), and I am
looking for
an engine expert to have a look at all the pieces and tell me what caused
the
failure. I have the entire engine disassembled and available for
inspection in
Louisville Kentucky.
Or, I would like any info on KS bearing failure and their roll in engine
failures.
My engine failed with less than 400 hours since 0 time rebuild.
The engine started making a faint knocking noise followed by oil temp
climb and
caution, I headed back to my field and I was on base leg when a
connecting rod
failed and punched thru the case, I landed without further incident.
The engine seized just after touchdown. The case, crank, cam, rods,
pistons and
cylinders were all damaged and unusable.
Of note, my engine started making metal on the last oil analysis
indicating something
wearing, the company said to retest in 25 hours, I didn't make 10. I
suspect
the KS rod bearing failed causing the rod bolts to work harden and fail.
If you have any experience or knowledge you could pass on to me, please
call or
email me.
My goal is to pursue KS bearing if they are determined to be the cause of
the failure.

Subject: Engine failure

I had an engine failure in my Harmon Rocket (Lyc IO 540), and I am
looking for
an engine expert to have a look at all the pieces and tell me what caused
the
failure. I have the entire engine disassembled and available for
inspection in
Louisville Kentucky.
Or, I would like any info on KS bearing failure and their roll in engine
failures.
My engine failed with less than 400 hours since 0 time rebuild.
The engine started making a faint knocking noise followed by oil temp
climb and
caution, I headed back to my field and I was on base leg when a
connecting rod
failed and punched thru the case, I landed without further incident.
The engine seized just after touchdown. The case, crank, cam, rods,
pistons and
cylinders were all damaged and unusable.
Of note, my engine started making metal on the last oil analysis
indicating something
wearing, the company said to retest in 25 hours, I didn't make 10. I
suspect
the KS rod bearing failed causing the rod bolts to work harden and fail.
If you have any experience or knowledge you could pass on to me, please
call or
email me.
My goal is to pursue KS bearing if they are determined to be the cause of
the failure.
