Looks like Hightower has decided to step down. Too much of a disruption to his family to move them up from St. Louis.

I saw that right as I was stepping on an airplane but just now got a chance to read it. Sounds like a way for him to "gracefully" step down. You don't have a career that he has and take that kind of job without having thought through the family issues. Now if they get rid of J Mac we'll be 2 for 2!

Michael

Turns out that relocation was in fact a condition of his employment. The board apparently did not budge on that and he blinked.

Heck, keep him, just lay down the law to him regarding appropriate content
in Sport Aviation.

I couldn't agree more. My Sport Aviation has morphed into Flying. I
really don't see much value in continuing my EAA membership since I get
aggravated every month when the magazine arrives. The only think
keeping me right now is Young Eagles .... but I'm close to dropping that
too.

I'm surprised nobody here has mentioned the Jack Pelton effect. Do we really believe this is about a disagreement regarding relocation?

Headline from AVweb:
"In a surprise announcement Monday, EAA president and CEO Rod Hightower said he was stepping down effective immediately. The decision came following an EAA board of directors meeting in which former Cessna CEO Jack Pelton was elected chairman. EAA spokesman Dick Knapinski said Pelton will oversee the search for a new president for the organization. "I will be working closely with the EAA board of directors to ensure a seamless transition to a new leader," Pelton said."

Jack becoming chairman of the board is a coincidence that unfortunately
is getting lumped together in these press releases. The previous
chairman, Louis Andrew, retired after AirVenture and the re-election
process has been going on since then. There was a board meeting on
Sunday to elect a new chair and we chose Jack. Monday Rod resigned. The
the two events were not related in the least.

I suspect his resignation was spurred on by a number of factors that included his relocation issues; but also included the election of Jack Pelton and the general sentiment from many EAA members in protest to the directions Rod was taking things. Resignations at this level, without some sort of crime, are rarely just one thing. I'm sure things were just getting too uncomfortable for him.

I for one, am happy he stepped down. Now, to see where things with EAA go.

I'm encouraged by Pelton's announcement including "... As an association we must remain focused on the original mission of our founder, Paul H. Poberezny, to welcome all members no matter what they fly, celebrate our volunteers, and treat our employees fairly ..."

That was the quote of the day. But later got edited by the censor police at EAA.

There us still a lot of work ahead, but it is an exciting time of renewed energy among the membership ranks.

I think whomever rewrote the press release or directed that to be done, should be shown the door as well. I'm sure that Jack wouldn't appreciate his quote being spun the way it was.

My guess is that there is a contract in place between the EAA and Rod that prohibits either party from speaking negatively about the other. That was likely the motive for removing such a direct comment.

Both parties want to move on without damaging each others character any more than it already is.

I am sorry to see Mr. Hightower leave, I understand the dynamics of both former leaders and their strong imprint on the operations.  I will hope that in the future the membership is more articulate, the board more attentive and the venue continues to prosper.  I have been awash in the Warbirds of America and ventured off the Experimental path.  All of us need to find our roots, invest in our future and not let the EAA go the way of AOPA with "Slick magazine authors, topics off the mark focused on NBAA type corporate interests and the sirens call of quick bucks.

Tony Bengalis is sorely missed as are many of the writers of twenty years ago.
Another Flying Magazine association is not why I became a Lifetime Member.  It is not why I bring groups to Wisconsin each year.   It was, IS and should always Be The EXPERIMENTAL Aircraft Association.

John Cox
PS, I hope it wasn't VAN giving Rod the RV-12 kit that did him in.
