Fuelled my CJ for the first time last week since import in 2006.
Fuel lines primed and the engine has run (with an awful oil leak from behind the prop dome) but the primer handle is sooooo stiff it takes all the might you have to move it.
Any ideas what causes this or if the seals inside it can be changed?

Order a set of prop seals from Doug and replace the ones in the prop hub
piston. Most likely the old ones are simply deteriorated.
Assuming you do mean the primer pump on the right side by your elbow,
there is one seal inside which can be replaced. I'm sure Doug has them
in stock as well. Remove the knurled nut below the primer and turn the
knob to the left or right as if you were going to prime the engine. You
can then extract the primer pump from the female end which remains
affixed to the console. Disassemble the primer pump plunger by removing
the screw in the center of the knob and slide everything off the
plunger, including the old seal. Reverse the procedure to reassemble
and install in the female end.

You have to be substantially familiar w/ an aircraft to spit out specifics like that.
How many of you think Dennis should get some kinda PLAQUE? All those in favor, say "Aye!" Talk about the "man w/ the plan." I will never forget disassembling my newly-purchased Yak ALONE and outdoors on a chilly November Saturday last November at Flying W and hitting a "wall" w/ the process as I pondered the early dusk and the nearly 1200 miles I had to drag the thing back. After about a 90 second call to Dr. Dennis I was on my way once again w/ the tools he specified (as well as sizes and physical positioning) and the "wall" was gone. I'm sure I don't need to say this to anyone, but there's a BIG difference between a "know-it-all" and someone who honestly knows it all. There are some mighty helpful people on this list, but - in my book - Dennis takes the cake! Thanks, Dennis - for ALL you do!

Put some oil on it. "Mouse Milk" or something similar. You will need to do this occasionally anyway. Try that first.

Based on what he said it has been sitting for 6 years. So spend $5-6
and replace the darn thing. It's probably dry-rotted anyway. He's got
to order a new seal kit for the prop hub. So why not just include the
primer pump flat o-ring too?

Are you absolutely certain the inner prop piston seal was correctly
installed when you replaced them? If you pull the prop hub dome and
piston and look inside the hub, do you see oil lying inside the hub? If
there is oil inside the hub, either the small, inside seal was put in
backwards or the oil is leaking in to the hub from the back end
(threaded end) of the oil tube. The inside of the hub should be dry.
No oil whatsoever.
Did you replace the blade collett seals? These seals are located on the
inside of the large castellated nuts on the side of the hub. You must
unscrew the blades, remove the counterweight clamps and remove the large
castellated nut on each side. Then remove, clean and repack the large
bearings, the race for the inside bearing and the slider. The seals are
usually in the hub seal kit.

Thanks for the input.
Yes i meant the engine fuel primer. I do think i have a seal kit from Doug already on the shelf so i'll pull the thing appart as per Dennis's instructions and replace it. Wlll also lubricate upon re-assembly. Not sure what mouse milk is but I have some white grease I could use.
The prop seals were replaced, upon further inspection the leak seems to be coming from the root of prop blades (not the dome seal).

While I agree that the seal probably could use replacing based on the stated information, also remember that the collar nut that secures the assembly effects how much friction is on the primer. If it is gorilla tight, it can certainly make the primer a bugger to operate. Make sure that has proper tension, also.
Happy Flying,
Barry

I'm thrilled to hear it was an easy fix! Now, the other side of this equation is that if the collar nut is too loose, the primer will leak fuel. Just FYI...
It's 22 degrees with a white blanket as far as they eye can see here. Beautiful, but not exactly Stearman weather....
Happy Flying to those of you in warmer climes!
