Gerd,

So sorry to hear about your plane, but very glad you are OK. That's the important part of the story.

Wow, Gerd, so sorry to hear about the rotten luck with the electrical system failure, but I think you did an excellent job of flying the airplane. Remember any landing you can walk away from is a good landing.

Great seeing you at the Lightning Homecoming and Fly-In.
Blue Skies,
Buz

I have news for the Lightning Group, and its not good news:

On november 12th my Lightning D-ELIY , Kit 89 was damaged beyond
repair after only 8 flight hours in an emergency landing that was the
consequence of a total electrical system failure. Some of you might
remember that my plane has/had! an ULPower engine with dual electronic
engine control , ignition and fuel injection. Apparently the Main DC
Bus had a short , the 2nd battery was depleted fast- propably the bus
tie feature didn`t separate the DC busses as it should and the whole
electric sys went dead.
After the engine stopped I had to glide out of 4500´ft and made it to
an open meadow with an uphill slope. I couldn`t lower the flaps-
electric!- and also had lost my EFIS. Because I had to cross a small
power line I may have been low on airspeed , and very shortly before
T/D the engine gave a last burp- which both together made my left wing
drop.
The wingtip touched first which spoiled my attitude in all directions,
and the fuselage hit the ground prop first. The impact tore the engine
downward out of the firewall - the fuse rim and the engine mount
points held together, but the AN4 bolts stripped their threads or
broke off. Due to the impact the seat pan with my 205lbs on top broke
through the bottom of the fuselage , which was propably a good thing
because it can have saved my back. The complete fuselage behind the
cockpit was twisted to the left.
The Airplane came to rest after a 100ft slide, still upside up and on
3 wheels, although the nose gear and the right main gear were bent.

I climbed out of the cockpit with a bruised shin (from the panel box),
a very slight whiplash injury, and a severely hurt flyboy ego.
My feeling is: it could have gone better, but it also could have gone
worse - much worse! So I am very happy that all in all I had a lucky
day and my Guardian Angels were apparently flying along in close
formation.

The plane is fully insured, the insurance rep declared it a total
write-off. Of course the Aviation Bureau Rep showed up and checked
everything incl remaining fuel(15gals) and all documents. All was
found in order. So far nobody has accused me of neglect or other
unorderly things, so I hope there won´t be major problems with the
insurance.

Of course the media were all there. A local TV station has broadcasted
some footage, you can see it here:

Commentary is German but the pics speak for themself, I think

That´s it for the moment

Gerd,
So sorry to hear about your electrical power failure and subsequent emergency landing. Great job getting it back on the ground and not suffering any major injury to you. I hope your insurance covers the  loss and you're back to building again.

Gerd,
Very sorry to hear of the loss of your plane, but equally glad that you were not seriously hurt. We wish you the best.

Glad to hear you're okay! As we used to say in software, once you've written a program then you know how to write it. I can't imagine how quickly your second Lightning will go together!
