This was just received via one of our Canadian associations and I think it
is worth forwarding to the Kitfox list as I believe a number of fellows are
using these engines and possibly the MGL EFIS.

Ted Palamarek
Edmonton Alberta
KF IV/912
RAA Canada has received a letter from Canada Transport Safety Board
concerning a fatal UL crash this past summer. On climb out the Rotax 582
engine abruptly lost power and it appears that the pilot attempted to turn
back, and the plane stalled and crashed. Mention is made of the MGL Enigma
EFIS and its fuel flow transducer that has a 1 mm ID jet installed. A Rotax
582 requires 0.45 litres per minute of fuel flow, and it appears that with
the usual pulse pump there was no more than .24 litres per minute available
when the 1 mm orifice was used. Allowing for the fuel in the float bowls
this meant that full power would not be possible for more than 20 seconds.
It is noteworthy that Rotax specifies a fuel line with an ID of no less than
5 mm, and they caution never to restrict the fuel flow. MGL now has a safety
notice on this and they are now recommending a 2 mm orifice.

Please take the time to check with MGL if you are using one of their fuel
flow measuring systems, and if you know of any pilots using these please
encourage them to do the same.
