New 912ul. Fuel tends to leak from Vent tube and filter. Valve does not appear to leak when actuated by light finger pressure. Have checked float arms adjusted lever to valve slightly but still leaks.

John,
This has been a mystery to me and it is a problem that is frequently
discussed. The only time I experienced it was when I rebuilt my carburetors
and put In the new float needles among the other things. I was told that
there are two different needles, one for the bouncier ULS - at least on
start-up and shut down - and one for the 912 UL. I went back to the old
needles and no further problems. Others have suggested out of balance
carburetors - don't know about that one. My new Model IV has a 1994 engine
and there are no such issues which makes me think it just might be the float
needles. Sorry for just opinions and nothing really helpful.

Actually, Lowell, there are at least 3 different float needles, and
they are color-coded on the spring end of the needle. The coloring is
very faint, and you almost have to have them all in front of you to
compare the colors. The one with the weakest spring is the silver
one, the middle strength spring is gold, and the one with the
strongest spring is black. The spring strengths are about 4 oz.,
about 6 oz., and about 16 oz. When I had a Bing on my Jabiru engine,
I ended up using the black-coded needle, along with a larger float
needle seat (3.7 mm), and that proved to be the best for my gravity-
feed fuel system.

Hi John,
If the carbs are fairly old (6+years) and have never been rebuilt it's time. The two most likely causes are float arm height wrong. It should be 10.5mm measured from the edge of the carb. The carb must be off and upside down to measure this. The float needle may need to be replaced. The old style has a red tip and the new is black. If the carb vent tubes are getting different pressure readings because of placement one may be getting a negative pressure. If a float is starting to go bad it will not control the fuel level and it will come out the vent tube. Pull the bowl and pour fuel back in the bowl with the floats. The metal pins should ride even with the fuel level. If one is starting to sink replace them both.
And I forgot that a poor carb sync will make the plane shake and make controlling the fuel level in the bowl too hard and it will spill out the vent.

good information thank you. this is a new engine replacing the one that seized when an oil seal failed at the valve lifter tube/crankcase interface. going through the mechanical and pneumatic synchronization now and into the weekend.
