Hi,
A bit more than a year ago, the Rotax 912 generator
of my Zenith 601HDS quit charging on a
cross-country trip from Pecos, TX to Deming, NM.
The voltage dropped gradually, but I made it to the destination.
It turned out that nobody at the airport knew how to deal with the problem.
But friend Philip, who fortunately lives not far from that airport, came and helped
on short notice. We got a phone link to a Rotax specialist in Florida
who guided us through a testing procedure. It turned out that most likely
the regulator/rectifier had failed. A new regulator/rectifier fixed the problem,
as predicted.
Recently, I decided to assemble a short write-up that guides the
user through the testing procedure of the generator and
regulator/rectifier. The test steps require only a volt/ohm meter.
If you have a Rotax 912/914 engine and want to print a copy, go to

If you have suggestions for improvement of the document, please send them, and
I will incorporate them into the document for the benefit of other Rotax drivers.
Happy flying,
Klaus
