Hi Kolbers,
I need some help ,and head scratching--read thinking.
Still fly my HKS powered Firestar, however just finished
building a Zenith 701 with a 912ULS with about 800 hrs,
that was removed from a Titan Tornado.John H. you may be intrested to know the plane was built and owned by
Ken W. Korenek who flew it with your friend John Wiilliams.
The engine is in good shape and runs good. BUT when I tried to go around the patteren , about half way around
I had to abort because the temps were going torwards
red line CHT was 270 and climbing, and oil temp 250 and
climbing. After landing could not cool down by runing at idle.
I removed the cowling and flew about an hour at different
speeds and power settings the temps stayed normal
oil temp 235F and CHT around 200. the cowl came from
Zenith for a 701 with a 912 bed mount.The oil cooler is
mounted piggyback on and in front of the water radiator.
They both came off the Titan and preformed good there.
They are mounted about an inch behind the prop, and
the tops are about 2 inches below the prop shaft centered in the middle of the hole in the cowl.
A friend that flies a Rans cayotte , told me that when he
first started he had the same problem --He thinks there was
an air bubble in the water sys.
Any one with thoughts , knowledge , or advice please respond. Thanks
Frank Goodnight

Frank G/Kolbers:

Have no experience with enclosed 912's, so cannot help you there.

My experience has been that the cooling system has to be bled and topped off
until all the air is out of the cooling system. This probably means that
you will have to raise the tail, or put the airframe and engine in whatever
attitude it will require to bleed the air. In addition, you will need to
insure the coolant recovery system is sealed and operating as required.

If after doing the above, you can further lower temps by reducing the ratio
of water to antifreeze. More antifreeze reduces cooling capacity. Less
antifreeze increases cooling capacity. I usually operate with enough
antifreeze to insure I am covered down to about 0F.

Have you checked with Zenith to help solve your problem?
