Just finished my 701 , about a hour and a half
flight time.
Have a problem with overheating --912 ULS--
that came off a Titan Tornado.Engine is in good shape 800 hrs.
When trying to fly around the pattern the CHT will
trend towards overheat about, half way around I aborted at 270 F , the oil temp
also looks like it would over temp--250 F and going up
After landing the temps continue to go up as I tried to idle
and cool down. Removed the cowling and flew at various
power settings and speeds for about an hour.All temps are normal--
oil (at)235F--CHT(at)around 200F.
Another 912 uls user told me that when he first started up he had a over heat problem that was caused by a air bubble trapped in the
water circuit that worked itself out over time.
I would like to hear from any one that has had similar
problem. Or know what might be causing it , and best of all the cure.Thanks

What cowling are you using? Do you have enough of the radiator exposed? Any pictures you can share?
With the newer style 701 cowling my plane suffers from low oil & CHTs this time of year. The entire radiator and oil cooler are covered in aluminum tape.

Thanks for your reply.
Don't know for sure what cowling I have got . I bought it from Zenith in September,
told them it was for a 912 bed mount. The radiator and oil cooler are the ones that came off
the Titan the oil cooler is piggy backed on the radiator , Flew that way on the titan for over
800 hrs. But the engine was exposed --un cowled in that app.
The coolers are about 1 inch behind the prop, and the top is about 2 inches below the
shaft. right in the center of the hole in the cowing. Can't send pictures today, possibly
later .--Have to get a friend to do it for me.
Thanks for any thoughts you --or anyone else may have.

I had a overheat problem on my 2003 era CH701 / 912S when I first started flying. It turns out that I had plenty of radiator and oil cooler exposed on the inlet side, but not enough cowl air exhaust opening to let the air our the bottom. I trimmed the opening larger around the muffler area and the increased flow dropped the temps drastically.

I don't claim to be an expert, but I suspect it would take something fairly drastic like air in an oil line to create the symptoms you described. I've got a 912S with a newer-style cowl and it will just get to maybe 235F if I let it toward the end of a near full-power climbout on a hot (100F on the ground day). What you describe is a lot more drastic than that.
If so, maybe it fixed itself after it cooled off on the ground and the problem is solved. But I think I'd take the appropriate hoses off at the top end, shake the hoses around to free up any bubbles caught in the bends, and carefully fill the hose with oil before reconnecting.
Getting the engine to warm up in cooler temps has been the bigger problem. I finally make a pretty simple slider gate that fits over the oil cooler (between it and the fiberglass hood) thats controlled from the cockpit. Works -great-, kind of like a cowl flap. Much faster warmup time and keeps the engine warm when tooling around slow on a cold day.
