If you are seeing effect on sealing tape, you have the beginnings of
leakage, either from an old hose or from end plate seal. I change my hoses
every 3-4 yrs as cheap insurance against deterioration.
If that doesn't cure problem, then I'd pull wing away from fuselage and
examine the end plate and associated fuel sender for seepage, possibly from
end plate screws or sender screws. If plate seal is deteriorating and
weeping at glass to plate joint, it needs to be removed and cleaned and
resealed with polysulphide.

I have a Pulsar XP (860 TT on 912UL 80 HP) and the cockpit has a distinct
mechanical/
fuel smell. Nothing is leaking at the fuel line connectors to the fuel
tank selection switch. However, I do have a wee bit of very light moisture
that
has become evident at the joint of the left wing to the fuselage-at the joint
I have 1.5 Inch 3M tape I've used to close the gap as gap tape and it's
getting
a little tacky on the underside. Can't tell if it's from the fuel tank check
valve or at the joint of the wing. But, no fuel drips on the hanger floor
( I have a Carbon Monoxide alarm-so, the smell is not of exhaust or fumes. It
just smells like the cotton fabric sound covering on the walls has taken a lot
of smell over the past 14 years. Incidentally, I have not taken the wings off,
nor did the previous owner. But, I think it's plausible that it's a fuel line
connector.
Any thoughts on this? Had a similar situation. Is a Glades Fresh Scent plug-in
the answer? (If It was my wife's plane it would smell like lavender when you
pushed open the canopy! Ha!)

A number of us have had fuel smells in the cockpit in the past, due primarily
to
inexplicable percolation of stuff through rubber fuel hoses in the cockpit.
This issue was discussed at length a few years ago both on the web group at at
the gathering in Kansas.
If this is the problem that you have then a solution is to change the hoses
out
for teflon hoses. A number of us have done that successfully. Some years back
I did a little power point presentation on the issue for the Kansas gathering.
Happy to send you a copy if you would like.

If you have the original resistance fuel Level sending units, don't forget t
o check the electrical connection terminal packing seal. That fiber gasket/
seal eventually dries out and leaks just enough to get wet and cause a smell
.

After 14 years I would go along with Brian's theory of deteriating fuel
hoses.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and thoughts. As a non-builder, what size/ length of SS Fuel Lines do I need to order for the left and right? It's a Rotax 912 UL. Available at Aircraft Spruce?

See my .ppt posting to the Pulsar Aviators group on Yahoo. Fuel Smell.PPT This gives some part numbers but the length and end fittings will be a custom fit, depending on how the builder did the installation.
The teflon fuel lines used are from Earls, but there is an equivalent Aeroquip line that Aircraft Spruce can supply.
