G’Day All and a happy and healthy New Year,

Please refer to the email below.
My friend has a westernized Yak 52 TW and has been having ongoing issues with the tacho sender unit. Details below.
Can someone help with this?

<![if !supportLists]>(1) <![endif]>Has any one had any issues with these units?
<![if !supportLists]>(2) <![endif]>If so, what is the fix? Would this be an isolated case? Or is there a more robust replacement?

Ray tells me that it would seem as if the sender unit cannot handle the vibrations of the M14-P and it has been fixed 3 times.
Richard Goode suggested that Aircraft Spruce would have a replacement and they have.

Finally on take off the other day the Tacho needle was all over the place and the sender unit is now completely US.

Thanks and cheers,
Chris.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the return E-mails and telephone call, I found the elecrtronic sender unit - UMA 1A3 at Aircraft Spruce and have ordered a replacement with them.

For the forum information the Yak 52TW ( Tail Wheel – Western) Serial No 0412507. The Tachometer is electronic in RPM hence the sender is a relatively small electronic unit.

Many thanks for your assistance regards Ray.

Hi Chris,

I sold my spare parts and maintenance business seven years ago in order to simplify my life, so, today, I simply sell aircraft; engines and propellers.

The business continues to trade as "Russian engineering", and for parts you should go to :parts(at)wlacrussianeng.co.uk

But if he has a 52 TW, I am fairly sure that it has Western instruments, so he should go to someone like aircraft spruce.

With regards

Richard

G’Day Richard,

Trust this email finds you well and enjoying the festive season.

Please refer to the email below from a friend of mine.
Ray has a 52 TW with, I think, westernized instruments.
Can you please assist Ray with this problem with the Tacho sender unit.
You may need further information from Ray. reastwood(at)adam.com.au (reastwood(at)adam.com.au)

I have sent Jim Kimball an email re the oil shut off valve and am awaiting his reply.

All the best for the New Year.

Thanks and cheers,
Chris.

Hi Chris, Happy new year to you I hope that your celebration’s went well.

I need a new Tacho electronic sender unit, it has shaken apart three times previously and I have managed to put it back together each time, but now the tacho needle has a severe fluctuations and I think that its internals have gone west. Honestly this small sender unit on the engine is not up to the vibrations that the Mp-14 engine produces, nevertheless I now need a new one do you use Jill Gernetzke
(jill(at)m-14p.com (jill(at)m-14p.com)) for spare parts??

I notice that you read the Matronics web forum regularly is it worthwhile? And to get on to the forum it looks to me that you need to make a monetary donation to the web management, I do not mind doing this if worthwhile.

Third and last you were going to look into the US people who supply the oil supply shut off valve kits, you may recall that I ordered the parts (twice)and did not receive a reply to my enquiry/order.

Your expert advice in all matters Yak related would be appreciated,

Regards, Ray Eastwood

Eliminate this long time problem by replacing with an electronic tach, like the Horizon tach.

Old senders were built by VDO. New senders are now built in house and have a different connect. Order a new one that's upgraded. Get it direct from UMA.

Chris & Ray, I have a Yak 52W that had the UMA tach sender unit. It was a continuing problem. UMA was helpful in providing replacement senders, but they never lasted. I installed a Horizon electronic tach. It has proven to be a wonderful instrument. As a bonus, it can give an early warning of weak aircraft batteries; if the tach switches off and on when the fuel transfer pumps are turned on, the batteries are low. Happy New Year, Mike Roehr

The actual issue is the wire in the pin connection plug vibrates and breaks loose giving a intermittent connection. If you plug it in and let the wire hang off the sender the engine vibration will shake it until it weakens and break is internally in the plug. If you use a cushioned tie wraps around the connector and keep the whip saw effect from shaking it to death you will not have a issue. Sometimes you can replace the sender and in doing so you temporarily move the wire on the end of the plug making a new connection until it moves again at a later date and then thinking it's the sender buy a new one and start the process all over again. my original sender now has 300 hours on it , no issues yet.
