Hi

I have a problem I believe is not uncommon ".After flight I find a stain along the rear fuselage caused by fuel venting from the vent on top of the fuselage.  I have a fuel injected (not a Rotax ) classic mono with no sight gauge . I have one pipe from the tank to a vent on top the plane as per drawings. The return pipe for the pumps goes back to the port side of the tank. I am getting surges out of the breather pipe, I assumed this was just a drop of fuel in the breather pipe. I placed in the breather line, at the highest point a plastic fuel filter to hopefully stop a small surge. It does not work I am still getting fuel down the rear of the plane. Is this just over filling or am I missing something? Sorry if this has been addressed before but I don&rsquo;t read every mail

Hi Roger,



I refuel after each flight absolutely to the top until fuel spits out of the breather and I see it in the tank, since I don't have a reliable fuel gauge. I then trailer my Europa home and to the airport for the next flight. No fuel comes out. So I cannot imagine, that you just overfilled.

Hi Roland.

Just my thoughts, i don,t think its a good idea to fill to the top every time as you have fuel up large hoses which are in the cockpit so don,t think its a good ides to leave fuel there , it may be OK as fuel is in the rest of the rubber lines, but i would,nt.

My fuel gauge is useless 56 =35 lts, and i was flying around thinking all was well , So for the time being why not drain the tank, and refill by 5 lts at a time, and making a fuel chart, its a morning work but easy to do. Mine works well have tested know it pretty accurate so feel much happier now.

One day i will get round to recalibrating the gauge or a new one.

as you suspected not ideal indeed. Until I have something better (on my to do list already), I feel best to know the total fuel quantity and calculate conservative with 20 l/h and still have the reserve to my disposal.

That has been addressed in a previous topic: fuel flow is the solution! 

The Mod quoted is the LAA Mod 12209. (In the document some builders had said

which was that they had obtained adequate results by assuming the return

flow was constant and “fixing” the “K” factor accordingly)...

I had the same problem with my Europa - brown fuel stains from the roof fuel tank vent all the way to the tail plane, this happens with full fuel to the 

filler cap on the climb out.



The solution is to cut the fuel vent line where it passes the top of the filler neck.

then, using AN fittings, connect the roof vent to the rear face at the top of the filler neck, and the tank vent to the Fwd. face at the top of the filler neck.

Mine was an XS, It did it from day 1. 



Forgot to mention you need to Redux the AN fittings to the filler neck as you screw then in.

I now own Steve V's first Europa.  The only trouble l had was entirely self inflicted.  I refuelled to top of filler on a cold day and lost a few litres out the overflow when the fuel warmed up.  Unfortunately the fuel attacked the edges of my nice G-IPOD registration on the fuselage so they now curl slightly.



I now try not overfill unless l go flying immediately.



Incidently l am now in Switzerland working for Pilatus Aircraft.  Does anyone have the contact details of an Swiss Europa owners?

 In the UK I would advise not filling to the top as all changes to the vent  system should be approved.  I have been an advocate of some sort of  underside drain out the bottom of the aircraft because of the low pressure area  on top of the aircraft sucks the small amount of fuel out the vent over the rear  fuselage.

  

 I agree that it would be nice to see a small elbow in the fill tube near  the top to allow the expanding fuel (fill in the cold and let the plane sit in  the sun or warm garage).  The elbow would lead to a vent line on the bottom  of the aircraft.  Fuel still drains out, but doesn't stain our paint.

  

 See the fuel vent posts from the archives or mine on www.customflightcreations.com.   My website was corrupted by a well meaning friend and some data lost  but the fuel vent is still on it.
