Guys, great discussion of Rotax/Viking! I am just finishing my Speedster. It’s ready to cover and the Viking is still on the floor. I hope to fly it by summer, and will report all relevant info. I will use a Warp 3-blade prop. Far as I know, it may be the first Viking/Kitfox. McBean has a Viking but has never installed it. Jan is building my engine mount so w&b will be a “wait and see” proposition. I have extra weight in the tail (fully airfoiled surfaces and controls) so the little extra weight will be ok. My building has been going slow since I have been flying all over the country in my new Lancair 360. The folded Kitfox and 360 fit into a single T hangar.
My thinking is initial cost and repairability of the Honda can’t be touched by Rotax. Break a Rotax crank, if you don’t crash you probably will sell your house to buy a new one. I have driven many Honda engines, cars and bikes, and never put a wrench on one. Plus, all parts available down the street at Dallas Honda. No freakin carbs falling off due to broken rubber! I can’t promise the performance numbers, but I will race anyone with a 912 and bet a C note. We’ll know soon! Ed
