So, 1st permit renew done (when paperwork arrives) now planning:
Its been a while since I crossed to France, can anyone confirm:
a) log flight plan with AFPEX, and wait for code
b) I can fly from a strip so long as I land at a French customs airfield
c) I need to take a PLB (GPS yellow hand held thing)
d) I presume I will be able to file a Flight plan from France for the return the old way or is that AFPEX again?
e) I can fly direct to a strip in the UK so long as I give Customs 24 hour notice an a time (used to be the case)
f) I guess I need to take a bunch of paperwork, radio licence, permit, insurance etc
Do I need to get permission to land a LAA permit plane?
Thanks, in atticipation

a) You don't need to wait for a code, just wait 1 hour or more and activate
with someone like London Information when airbourne.
b) Yes
c) It would be best although there is still some debate
d) It is difficult to find an old style flight planning facility in France.
You can do it through AFPEX if you have access to a computer of a mobile
that is online, or you could do the same through the French OLIVIA site.
Also you could file your return flight plan before you leave the UK if you
know when you are returning (up to 5 days in advance now)
e) Yes you can, but you only need to give 4 hours notice to UK Customs
f) Yes.
No you do not need permission to land a permit plane.

Graeme, just to add a little to that. a) Have you looked
at the 'flying in Europe' section on the new Europa Club
website (www.theeuropaclub.org ), which sets out to have
all the answers to these and other practical flying
questions? B) although
AFPEx is good and worth getting on top of if you plan much
foreign travelling, the instant flight plan service
offered by Sky Demon is much easier. c) The French
gendarmerie/customs recently fined someone over 900 euros
for arriving at Le Touquet without a PLB or equivalent, so
don't risk it. d) Pretty much every French airfield that
is big enough to have an ATC service will either accept
paper FPLs or has a computer system to enter one directly,
and at smaller ones very often the flying club will fix
you up with their computer.
Why not join us on the Le Touquet Fly out? Or the
various other Europa Club flying abroad events?
