I recently purchased an ELSA and it was never fitted with carburetor heat. Is this not necessary on Jabiru engines? It seems they are always on Cont. & Lyc. carburetor engines.

My 2200 is on a Kolb MK3 above the wing pusher.Because it is un-cowled, it ices readily in humid cool conditions and is now equipped with an electric conductive heat element mounted on the carb body at the throttle shaft casting nord.If your installation allows warmed air from under the cowl to enter the intake it may be all you need,but the Bing ices.

What is “nord” ? I am looking for a place to attach a temperature sensor. This would seem to be the place.

The carb heat from Jabiru has two levels controlled by switches. Can recall the cost as it was part of the FWF package with the engine.

Just to be pedantic, there is no electric carb heat *from* Jabiru. There are several 3rd party sources for electric carb heat *for* Jabiru, or even more accurate, for Bing carburettors. MotionAero being one of them.
They all work on the same principle, a module with one or two heater elements (big resistors) that gets attached to the opposite side of the throttle lever. They usually generate between 30W and 70W of heat and seem to work well to keep ice from forming in the venturi.
Jabiru recommends an air filter box that can accept hot air as carb heat, see their installation manual.

I'll let you research the (nord).I have always considered it an un-machined out-cropping on a casting.As for the placement of that temperature sensor,that would depend on whether it is an oral or rectal model.Pun intended,have a good day James!

It's switched on 2 levels.The one from Jabiru is what I have but the link the guys provided to the after market one is where I would go.The price is similar but mine has failed already and the other type has got to be more rugged.

In my experience Jab engines aren't prone to carby ice. I've don't think I've ever had it in the air in 1500 hrs of flying Jabs. I don't do regular 6 min carb heat checks though I do have a play with it now and again at the beginning of a trip.
I've never had carby ice on the ground but I know of a two 3300's that have had it while taxiing out. Even one with the little electric thing bolted to the carby.
My engine does get a bit of ice as every so often, how do I know?, it eats a small blob of water an tells me it has, then my alarm system says 'what was that' (my wife bless her). Or if I have the bowl off there's a little ball of water in the fuel sometimes. I think this comes from taxiing in and it melts after shut down.
What would one do if one met those ideal conditions for carby ice and your light bulb sized heater on the side of the carby can't cope, or it pops and you haven't checked it lately and you don't have that knob in the panel. At worse, land if you can, at best get a fright.
Would I fly a Jab engine without a hot air carby heat?, nope,

My engine never shut down at cruise power settings,although it did get really rough as it ingested the ice chunks.If there is fog the elements are ripe for ice,but you can have ice at temps in the 60'sF if the humidity is high.The only time it might cause the engine to quit would probably be at reduced power settings and almost for sure at idle on decent.

Thanks Gary, power to the argument for hot air carb heat.
I forgot to mention I do use carb heat as I reduce power below 2000.
I'd feel lost without it but as Gary's says and my experience is, ice forms best at low revs when there is the biggest pressure drop across the carby.
Remembering of course, foggy mistys days are not necessarily the worst days for carb icing conditions. They are just when you think about it...
As with all these things it's your plane and you can do what you like!
