I have found that the extra fine black sharpies dry up almost instantly after the first use, the red and blue seem to last a bit longer. From what I can see on the package they are made offshore and “assembled” in the US. Having gotten tired of buying them blindly, I tried a pkg of Staedtler Lumocolor (guaranteed to last 2 days with the cap off). They are “made” in Germany. My experience so far, is the Staedtler works “first time everytime” . Nice fine continuous lines.

I've experienced the exact same thing sharpie dies fast, but I've found that if you lightly scribble across some wood (workbench) I've found they come right back to life..... I think they "skin over" and the wood trick clears it.

Agreed....
Either that, or they clog with oils, or grease.
I find it only happens when writing on metals....
But at home on paper.... No such issue.
I have a fineline Sharpie, that is mebbe six-eight months old, and it still flows first time

I have found that Sharpies are very intolerant to being left uncapped.
