I have only wing tanks.  I have a shutoff valve for each tank.  I never leave both valves open at the same time.  I take off and land on the fullest tank.  I check each tank before flight and use the lowest tank in cruise.  Prior to landing I go to the full tank. As the fuel pickup is in the rear of the tank, it can be uncovered at the pitched down attitude during approach if the tank is near empty.  Also, if I want to carry a heavy passenger, I can use most of  one tank and still have a full tank for flight with the passenger.
