Just out of curiosity...I recently received my latest EAA WARBIRDS magazine and while perusing the coverage of Sun N' Fun, noted there was but a single photo of an L-39 w/ a very conspicuous absence of any other Red Star aircraft. Assuming the event was well-attended by the Yak / CJ community, is there a bit of shunning occurring here? Or am I just being a paranoid alarmist? Aren't these aircraft bonified "WARBIRDS" - very active in promoting the sport and the joys of safe, semi-self-governed general aviation? This is not an attempt to stir up a hornet's nest. Maybe the photos just "played out" that way. And I am probably naively jumping to conclusions, but...where is the coverage / acknowledgement? There are Red Star forums, fly-by's, fly-out's, mass arrivals and tons of static representation. So...?

Welcome to the Red Headed Step Children Club! Unless you fly American or an Allied aircraft you just are not in the club.
I say screw them as I laugh all the way to and from the fuel pumps as my sortie rate beats them stupid!`

There will always be that element in any endeavor. Like Doc I just take my "revenge" out at the gas pump. But lets look at the money side. Your 'big iron' don't just use progoious amount of fuel but are far more complicated than a CJ or Yak. I once questioned a judge about a CJ or Yak ever getting a "Grand Champion" award. He pointed out that judges need to take into account the amount of work and difficulty in any restoration. A CJ or Yak will never be as 'complicated' as a 51 or F4U. That is one reason there is the "Best of " awards. And yes there is even some "politicking" involved but very little really. Having been around the restoration of everything from a 7AC to the A36 Apache, I can tell you the detail on the latter was unbelievable. How many of you realize that the A-36 had a spent brass collection box for the nose gun? And the money involved? Well you need very deep pockets and UNQUESTIONABLE passion to see the project though. Than there is the continuing cost. Our B-24 for instance cost over $4,000/ hr to operate. $80,000/yr in insurance. Yes its paying for itself BUT without that support (Its all donations BTW), it would be parked. Period.
This year at S&F RPA only had 6 to 7 aircraft there. We had about 30 at the AYS formation clinic on the week-end before. (We had a great time BTW) We had plan on having the clinic on dates so guys could go right on to S&F from there however only 5 of us did that. Concern of weather, jobs, etc etc personal stuff, always cut into the numbers. The thing is our participation will dictate our exposure or pictures in the magazines.
I have very good friends in the 'big iron'. They aren't really any different than us. They hobnob will other 'big iron' simply because they each have the same problems i.e. where can they get a decent replacement for a agzillion dollar radiator. They help each other just like we do here on the list but they are use to talking big money unlike us. I mean $250,000 for an overhaul RR is - - - - normal. Their rarity don't help them.
The lack of pictures of our Yak of CJ in one issue, is not really indicative of EAA policy or even most of the WB folks. Quite frankly if a Yak 50 showed up at a show, it would make it in the magazines. They are just never there. This year 'big iron' WB at S&F was down too. Who knows what cause it? Economy for one but it could be the "been there done that" syndrome too.
Anyway I've always found the WB group made up of the most passionate of the aviation citizens. From L birds to the Jets. We believe that our little bailiwick has a significant place and thus we act the way we do. I view those "hard heads" as a teaching opportunity. Usually just mentioning my gas bill just as a start.

Pappy you are spot on. As much as I would love an L39, a YAK 9 or George's 11 I have been spoiled by the gas sipping M14 as compared to the turbines, Allison's, and the Pratts. When you figure the hourly operating costs for the heavy iron, we in the RPA are sitting fat! When one hour of fun in one of the heavy birds equals roughly 10 hours in one of our YAKs or CJs I'll keep flying my lowly YAK that turns heads every time she fires up and does a fly by!
