I installed a Flightline FL-760 radio that has built in intercom into our KFIV. When the radio receives any signal, it cuts out the intercom. I called the tech dept at GulfCoast Aviation, the supplier, who told me that was normal in all radios with intercom. He said it was designed that way so you don't miss any ATC calls.

It's been a while since I've flown but I don't remember that being true. If that were true, when the radio was picking up a signal, you'd not be able to talk over your intercom to the other guy to say things like, "We're on fire, Do you see the traffic, You're airspeed is too low, or Watch out for those birds".

Do radios with built in intercom cut out the intercom when receiving a signal? Is the guy from Gulf Coast wrong?

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this, so I can determine if I've got a problem with the new radio

I haven't used the the Flight line radio, but I had two similar radios in homebuilts and they both worked the way you described.
I don't think you have a problem.

I use a GMA240 and by default it does *not* cut out the intercom. There is an option to do so by grounding one the pins however (I forget which now) but as you say it doesn't sound like a good idea.

Clem,
That is the way it is suppose to work. Every radio I owned with that capability had radio priority over the intercom.

The problem with giving intercom complete priority is that radio calls will be missed whenever the intercom VOX is tripped by a chatty passenger or even by cockpit noise. Of course that becomes a problem when you're supposed to be in communication with ATC. So that's why most intercom systems allow the radio audio to override the intercom audio. But if your flying hardly requires the radio, it's certainly a pain to have radio overriding intercom all the time.

Some intercoms have a three-way switch on them to either give the radio priority, to give intercom priority, or to mix intercom and radio together. Because mine does, I use intercom priority only when I'm away from the traffic area on a busy day and not interested in hearing everyone's unicom calls. But I switch it to mixed-mode when I'm heading towards the pattern. And I only use radio priority when I'm talking to ATC and I don't want to miss a single beat no matter what my passenger says. In that case I instruct them to point out traffic to me with their hand, and I can always switch back to mixed-mode.

If you like the idea of having radio audio mixed with intercom audio, maybe your radio guy could find a way to do that.
