I am considering a replacement for the Balkin-5 radio in my Yak 52. No urgency; it's still working OK. If I do replace it, I'd like to install the radio (or control head) in the same location as the existing radio's control head, not in a central console between my legs. I am also considering installing a second, remote control head in the rear cockpit. I've looked at radios like those from MGL, X-Com, Becker, Dittel, Microair and Trig. All have quite small footprints. Does anyone have a similar installation or experience with any of these radios? Or does anyone have any suggestions they'd care to make?

Just a few thoughts....

Microair is made in Australia and sometimes has to go there for repairs
.... which can take awhile.

I would avoid the Becker radios. Originally designed for glider use,
they are not very well shielded and can become problematic when exposed
to broadband noise, such as will happen when using something like the
P-1000 digital tach (connects to the P leads of the mags), as well as
replacing the stock ignition harness with Dennis's auto conversion kit.
Replacement of the stock ignition harness is a very good thing, and the
engine runs MUCH better, but it does raise the noise floor just
slightly. Most radios will continue to plug along very well even with
this happening, but the Becker sometimes chokes on it.

I am sure those who use the Becker successfully might object to my
comment here, but I've experienced this problem with this radio quite a
few times.

I had the Becker compact in my 50, and afterwards moved that same radio to
a Yak 52 (which has Dennis' automotive plug kit).
In that 52 there's also a PM1200 intercom (excellent!!!).
Until now, no problems, but of course you have a point Mark.
These compact radios are not designed for rugged, noisy planes like the
Yak.
I did have a lot of trouble with XCOM radios on the Yak 52.
The XCOM has a remarkably strong end amplification, but is also very
sensitive to bad antenna connectors or antenna cables.
I now have an 8.33 kHz separated Funkwerk ATR833 in my Yak 50.
Seems to be VERY good, although it's also one of those compact things,
specifically designed for gliders.
On both planes (the Yak 50 and the Yak 52) I've installed a Garrecht mode
S transponder.
One thing is certain: a sloppy installation ruins the best equipment.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. Right now I'm exploring MGL because they are located in Torrance, California, not far from my home base, Santa Paula, California. They offer their V6 and V6R, both of which are 6+ watts units. The V6 is around 4.25 inches in depth and the V6R is a remote unit (like the Balkan-5). Both models can be remotely controlled and both have built-in intercoms. Matt, the owner of MGL told me he will have their remote head available in a few months. If so, one could have the V6 mounted up front with a remote control head in the rear cockpit. Or the V6R mounted where the Balkan is located with remote control heads in each of the cockpits. As always, comments and suggestions are welcome. And thanks again for your comments to date.
