There was a thread about this time last year with two inputs of under $1800 for coverage on their RV-10s, one with Falcon and another with Williamsburg National. I just got my renewal charging $2325 for $140,000 (about the same as last year with no deductible, 1M liability, 10K/person medical) with Falcon and tried another broker who couldn't do any better. Just curious what folks are seeing this year. I max out the experience category both in the RV-10 and overall with no losses and the airplane is hangared so I'm dubious as to why the rates are $600 more.

Any current rates and sources with similar coverage would be appreciated,
Marcus

I talked to at least one person who said the place they got the low rate from last year is no longer writing. I think yours is in line with the norm for people with good time in type. I think although you may have tons of hours, the delta in price gets small over those with 1000 hours and an instrument rating....once you have that the price stays pretty similar.

One factor will be whether you are asking for a 1M smooth policy or 1M with sublimits of either 250K or 100K. The sublimits usually are 200-300 cheaper, but also provide less coverage.

I haven't hear of that before, what type of sublimits would these cover?

Thanks,

They are normally either 100K per person (not desirable) or 100K per passenger. Limits how much of your 1M coverage can go to one person. Obviously 100K doesn't cover much in way of medical bills these days for serious injury or burn. At least a 250K limit uses up most of your coverage that a 100K wouldn't (unless you injured both pax and persons on the ground).

A few months ago I went thru the insurance search when Britt stopped covering aircraft. Last year I paid $1850 with 160k hull coverage. Then when I had my new coverage quoted I was faced with quotes from 2278 thru 2585
So I called more agents and got more quotes. The apparent reality was that my old rate was too low and no longer attainable anywhere. So I stayed with my present agent and went with US specialities insurance at the 2278 price.
Record: No claims ever. 600 hrs. Instrument rated.

??? If you have sooth coverage limits on an experimental, I would really appreciate knowing who and where from. I have tried hard to get the per person number off the 100k limit and was able to do that though Nationair this year but only to a 200k per per person limit. ( 1 M total / 200k per person ) I was told that typically “smooth” coverage doesn’t functionally exist in the experimental side.

So functionally, your limit is the (# injured X sublimit/person) but capped at the policy limit and limited per person. Please someone chime in if this isn’t correct.

Bill

Thanks for all of the replies, unfortunately it looks like my quote is about right. Maybe someday the underwriters won't fear experimentals so much!

About the same price for me this year as well as last year, although I have my hull insured for $165k.

Thanks Bob, this is a good benchmark although it adds to my confusion. I was quoted by a local broker who said US Specialty with 160k hull coverage would be $2630. No accidents, 625 in the RV-10, 8500TT, ATP and mostly very complex time, EAA and AOPA member, yet I would get to pay an extra $352? Part of the smoke and mirrors of the insurance biz I guess.

Marcus, and all of the rest of the RV Family, I am just throwing this idea up in the air. I do not know the legality or it is even posible. I am prospective Rv-10 builder looking at about a year away from starting. The reason  is the affordability of the experimental aircraft. I am not sure of exactly how many RV  are flying or are in the process of getting build but I assume and I may be wrong but there are quite a few. Many builders probably would like some sort of insurance during the build process. I have been following your thread about insurance rates. My question is can the RV family CREAT it's own insurance company. Ex if there are 7000 flying RV and a rate that is affordable to all say 1500.00 a year the net sum is 10,500,000.00 dollars per year. Research thru the community would have to find out how many claims were filed and at what cost the total number of claims equaled. Just food for thought. I am sure there is someone out there with some sort of knowledge about insurance and legality. It just seems like a lot of money goes to the insurance companies and they give nothing back. Sorry I picked you Marcus but you have about the same qualifications ( pilot hours and ratings). I am not part of vans airforce yet. Thanks for listening and I would like to hear any replies Thank again John Z

Any current rates and sources with similar coverage would be appreciated,
Marcus

For what its worth, we tried to get enough interest in the self-insurance to start an RV program but we did not get enough interest to continue investing money into the program. We got only a fraction of those needed.

There is still a certain amount of seat of the pants guess work in aviation underwritting. This year, the company that covered me last year wanted a small increase, despite more time in type (and no claims). But a second company quoted less. Hard to figure. But as long as I can get multiple quotes at least there's competition for my business.

The reason the "pool" idea doesn't work: everyone thinks they should pay less than the other guy. And with good reason. Shouldn't the two seat guys, with 1/3 the passengers and half the hull values, pay half or less compared to the RV-10 guys? And should pilots with 1000 hours pay the same as those with 100? etc.

Something no one has mentioned (and the companies won't say much about it either) is age. At some point - 60, 65, 70,... - they start worrying about a deterioration in abilities and charge more.

Yes exactly. Also, the last time it came up, my thought was "there are just too many others I've met or heard about that I don't want in my risk pool." And I'm sure there are some who may feel that way about me. Personally, I'd never want to allow automotive engine conversions in my pool, for instance. But, some of them feel that way about "lycosaurs". And of course many of us have met "that guy" who we know is gonna kill himself and/or passengers some day.....but in my case, it only took a few months from when I knew it, until it happened at one time. So no, I probably wouldn't join a small risk pool that was built in such a way.
I think if we all focused on picking the best risk cases to have in the pool, it could save a lot of money, but to narrow it down to those we "trust" the most, would turn it into a much smaller pool.

Bob, Actually it sounds like a very ingenious idea, unfortunately it appears it's been looked into and a couple of other responses show some of the downsides to it putting it together. Might be worth floating the idea again though on the VAF forums. It would take a near 100% buy in across the RVs to make it work which would be a severe challenge, but the concept is great.
Thanks,

Marcus. Interestingly, when I started the quoting activity I got a high bid from US insurance. I then got more bids via another agent and US bid again, by accident. They usually take themselves out if double quoted, but a snafu occurred and the re bid at the lower number. So I went into WTF mode cause I was already irritated. And basically got that the higher # was an error.  So... You may want to push on your agent to dig into that.

One thing that we all can do is work to keep the Brokers honest. Every year, but one, it seems the rates went up for the same coverage policy. I got different answers every time for the increase. But when I looked into the different insurance carriers, I found in two occasions, two different Brokers were flat out not being honest with there quotes. I ended up changing Brokers because of there dishonesty. They simply, were not checking with all companies, even though they claim otherwise. I always found the same policy for several hundred less than there quote, and one time even cheaper than the previous year, after dropping the Broker, and moving on. They all have there preferred companies and most likely get a little something extra for using them. Just my 2 cents. always do your due diligence. Also, I was told that flying time only goes so far. As with most insurance, the high time guys help carry the lower time guys. You just don't get much of a brake for experience.
