Anybody installed an additional left hand throttle on instrument panel to enable left hand on throttle and right hand on stick so I can operate like I have been used to for fifty years in the cockpit?

You're on your own in designing a throttle control on the left side of the cockpit, but it can be done. An easier solution is to fly from the right seat. I have a friend who did just that in his RV-6, no problem. It's all an issue of getting used to it.

Guys, here`s how I did it and how I plant to do it with the next one.
The basic part is from A/C Spruce , I turned it updide down, cut away
some casing and removed the 2nd lever.
The whole thing got powdercoated . The knobs made a friend out of Oak on
a lathe. I have built a backplate with rivnuts that will be floxed and
bolted to the fuse side. The whole thing is as far aft as it is
because I wanted the kneeroom.
I had it installed in D-ELIY because somehow I like to to fly right
handed with the stick in the middle, even after flying with a left
sidestick for 17years. Funny, but somehow the smart hand kept pushing
the silly hand out of the way all the time;-))

It all handled just fine!

Gerd

George, check the Van's Airforce website...some of the RV guys there have done what you are looking for. May take some looking around or search function to find the threads. It is a very active site and a good resource.

Hi George,
I totally agree, most of my 8,000 hours of flying time is with the stick in the right hand and the throttle in the left, so that is the way I set up my cockpit back in 2005 when building N31BZ - photo below. I just added the same type of throttle on the left and routed it through the firewall to connect to the carb right next to the other throttle push/pull cable. It has worked great for over 800 hours.

Hi Buz,

What was the throttle type and length that you used for the left hand throttle control.  I would love to modify my Lightning that way.  I was finally able to solo my little bird last week and have had three days were I was able to take up and play.  52 over the numbers and keeping from landing until it settles works well, no more bounce.

Mike, I'm a right seat Lightning pilot...  Left hand has always felt akward and all the flying I have done has mostly been from the right seat with the stick centered or on the right and the throttle on the left. Anyone can fly from either side with the throttle mounted in the center.  See pics attached.

Hi Mike,
Sorry, I don't remember the type and length - it has been over 8 years since I was building N31BZ. Ask Nick what they currently use and get two exactly the same type and length. Just make sure when routing them to the carb that they both move easy. Of course moving one throttle will move the other throttle.
That's great about you checking out in your new jet. I know you are having fun.
Blue Skies,
Buz

You have got that right, Zipper. Anything else just doesn't feel right. When I fly the current Experimental Lightnings or the LS-1s, I often fly from the right seat. With two throttles (and dual brakes) in N31BZ, I can fly it from either seat, and if I am taking a current pilot for a ride, I will put them in the left seat and that gives them the option of having the stick in either hand and the throttle in either hand - what ever feels right to them. So two throttles, one of left side and one near the middle is a good thing.
Blue Skies,
Buz

PS: Hope to see you at the Lightning Fly-In and Homecoming this coming October.
