Kendal & Mark,
If the engine has been running, drain the oil, run again with clean,
straight mineral oil for 5 minutes to get splash oil on the internal parts.
It will stay on the steel parts far longer than compounded oil. The
original Russian tool kit has a grease gun-looking tool in it, that is used
to put preservative oil in the cylinders. (It can be a messy job.)
The 14mm dessicant plugs are a good idea and if you wrap it in a large
plastic bag, set a gallon of dessicant under the engine. Check the
dessicant on a periodic basis to see if the color has changed. If so, you
need to refresh the dessicant. It can be baked and reused. Obviously, if you
live in Florida or Wisconsin, you will need to change more frequently than I
do in Arizona where we think 25% humidity is awful.
Exhaust ports, carburetor intake and any other openings should be sealed.
If you don't mind the mess, you can also fog the outside of the engine.
Mark, thanks for the hot tip on the dessicant plugs! : )
