Stan,
I mounted my SL-30 in the location you are suggesting and I strongly recommend against it.
1. It is too low to easily see the display.
2. It is too easy to bend or break the knobs when climbing in and out. Ask me how I know.
3. The center location is easier for service, but only for the radio itself.
I recommend your alternate location on the upper left panel. I plan to remove my SL-30 and install a transponder there. I'm going to put in a 430w in the upper left panel.

Subject: comm. radio installation
A personal preference issue: On my instrument panel layout, I have been
showing a SL-40 located on the vertical centerline below a Dynon D1000
display, however, a trial fit of a mock-up at this location looks
awkward due to having to work around the cross braces. Doable, but. A
location on the upper left side looks easier and puts the face more at
eye level. I have seen radios at both locations, so feedback based on operational experience. I am planning a
single radio installation only, but might opt for the Dynon remote radio
as a second unit. The center mount allows for better access by either
hand, but I can see the advantages of the upper mount. This all has to
do with selecting locations for the Skyview components and everything
else that has to go behind the panel.
